Walt Disney World Resort provided a sneak peek at the attractions coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios for Toy Story Land during its Awaken Summer media event held April 19. Disney provided additional details and a first look at the area, focusing on the two new attractions that will be the headliners for the area: a family coaster and a saucer ride, and provided updates on the third track for Toy Story Mania.
Toy Story Land is themed to the world presented in the 1995 Pixar film “Toy Story,” scaled to allow guests to imagine they’re exploring the world of Andy’s backyard from the perspective of – and along with – one of the toys, including Woody and Buzz.
Slinky Dog Dash, the family coaster, will feature a track presumably built by Andy, the child of the “Toy Story” films. Using his Mega Coaster Play Kit, Andy has constructed a coaster in his backyard but added a few touches of his own: some of his other toys.
On Slinky Dog Dash, guests will “zip, dodge and dash” around the gentle turns and mild drops Andy has created while Slinky and his coils will stretch like the toy. At the Awaken Summer event, Disney Imagineer Kathy Magnum screened a concept video to members of the media to provide an idea of what the coaster would look like from the perspective of a rider.
Toy Story Land’s second attraction will be Alien Swirling Saucers, inspired by the toy play set Andy got at Pizza Planet in the first film. The attraction will feature aliens piloting toy flying saucers and trying to capture guests’ “rocket toy” vehicles with “The Claw.” Guests will rotate around toy planets and other space objects, while listening to “Space Jazz” music.
Disney did not address whether Al’s Toy Barn and Woody’s Round-Up area, previously seen in concept art, will still be part of Toy Story Land. It also remains to be seen whether the Slinky Dog coaster has been simplified from previous models or whether Toy Story Land will offer the level of details present in previous concept art.
Disney did not announce an opening date for the area.
Toy Story Land will expand Pixar’s presence in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, which is currently anchored by the very popular Toy Story Mania – a 4D shooting, midway-style ride in which guests shoot at virtual targets that resemble carny games. As with the new attractions, Toy Story Mania takes the position that guests are seeing the world through the perspective of Andy’s toys – the game belongs to Andy, the toys have been patiently waiting to play with it once he’s gone, and guests are invited to join in the fun.
While work on Toy Story Land is still ongoing, Disney also announced that Toy Story Mania will open its third track beginning Memorial Day Weekend. That expansion will better allow the attraction to handle guest demand, an increasingly important concern as Disney’s Hollywood Studios has closed many attraction as the park moves forward with not only Toy Story Land but Star Wars Land.
