It is that time of year… the holiday season…and a warm one at that. If you are looking for a break before Christmas Day, you might try one of these fine restaurants that are serving dinner on Christmas Eve.
West Street Grill in the heart of the charming village of Litchfield, known for it’s beautiful homes, stately green and classic Congregational Church is serving dinner from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at this popular award winning restaurant. Start off dinner with Stoneington royal red shrimp with fingerling potatoes, Spanish chorizo and blistered shishito peppers, moules with white wine, marinara, garlic and garden herbs or a smoked beet salad with white and gold beets, shaved chiogga beets and Ewe’s Blue cheese finished with beet and vanilla gastrigue. Dinner entrees offer something to please every palate and includes many vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options such as: spaghetti with fresh San Marzano tomato sauce with roasted garlic and basil chiffonade, Faroe Island salmon with locally foraged hen of the woods and piopino mushrooms finished with a smoked carrot emulsion and leek fondue and grilled rib eye with potato pave, crispy kale, confit of garlic, and cabernet jus.
In the heart of the Litchfield Hills, the Fife n’ Drum Restaurant in Kent is serving dinner on Christmas Eve from 5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. and is offering a full menu. Appetizers range from shrimp with valentina tequila cocktail sauce to a roasted beet salad with apples, celery root, walnuts, goat cheese and a sherry vinaigrette. The featured soup of the night will be shrimp and bacon chowder. Entrees range from grilled filet mignon with bearnaise sauce and roast lamb top round with a rosemary garlic jus to a vegetarian lasagna with eggplant, spinach, roast peppers, roast winter squash, feta cheese and a garlicy bechemel sauce. In the far northwest corner of the Litchfield Hills, the Interlaken Inn in Lakeville is serving their regular dinner menu until 9 p.m. on Christmas Eve. The menu offers a range of appetizers such as: oxtail risotto prepared with root vegetables, house made New England style crab cake served with black bean salsa and dressed with chipotle aioli and cornmeal crusted fried oysters served on top of a bed of braised pork. Dinner entrees include a mix to please any palate such as: sea scallops presented with sweet corn stew, fingerling and fried oysters and house made ricotta gnocchi tossed with roasted zucchini, summer squash and eggplant. If you are not up to entertaining Christmas Day, Interlaken Inn is offering a Prime Rib Buffet ($59 per person inclusive of tax and service charge) from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
The award winning seafood restaurant, the Saybrook Fish House in Canton located in the southern Litchfield Hills at the intersection of Rte. 44, 202 and 179 is serving lunch Christmas Eve from 12 noon to 3 p.m. and will offer dinner from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you are in the mood for sea scallops, crab cakes, stuffed scrod, fish and chips, lobster and many more delights from the sea, this is the place to go. Saybrook Fish House also offers a lighter fare menu that is served in their pub that offers burgers, salads such as the grilled salmon spinach salad, steamed clams and much more.
The elegant Mayflower Grace Inn located in Washington is serving Christmas Eve dinner from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The sumptuous dinner will include six delicious courses that offer a pleasing selection of perfectly cooked and presented cuisine. On Christmas Day, Mayflower Grace is offering a three -course brunch that will feature a host of holiday delights including toy crackers! Brunch is $85 per person and Christmas Eve dinner starts at $110 per person.
Carole Peck’s Good News Café, a highly acclaimed award -winning restaurant has been offering an a la carte menu for 22 years. This year’s “festive beginnings” include: Santa’s favorite Leek and sunchoke soup, seared duck “foie gras” with winter spice bread and mango salad and sesame tuna with green sauce and red topika and caviar with ginger mango carrot. Dinner includes everything from a Christmas goose with pinenut apricot stuffing and hailbut coulibiac with porcini mushrooms dill onions wild rice and winter nage to Rosemary rack of lamb. Make sure to save room for Carole’s “dashing desserts”!
New Milford’s La Piccoli specializes in authentic Northern Italian food, trattoria style. They are offering a special Christmas Eve menu from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. In addition to the regular dinner menu some of the specials of the evening include: grilled octopus served over haricot verts and grape tomato salad tossed with basil vinaigrette, baked lobster stuffed with risotto and crab meat served over mixed vegetables with garlic lemon butter dip sauce or roasted duck breast served over red beets and roasted potato finished with a sweet balsamic glaze.
If you are in the mood for fine award winning Italian fare, the Venetian Restaurant in Torrington will be serving lunch on Christmas Eve from 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. like they have for the past 43 years. Lunch specials include a variety of pasta dishes from penne alla vodka with pancetta in a delicate pink sauce and linguine with roasted peppers and sausage in a marinara sauce to chicken piccata with capers and lemon butter. A take home gift could include one of the restaurants home made pasta, sauces or salad dressings.
The romantically intimate Falls Village Inn located in bucolic Falls Village is serving a special Christmas Eve dinner from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. The Inn is bedecked for the holidays and has been thoughtfully decorated by Robin Cockerline of Whippoorwill Farms in Salisbury. The menu features classic American comfort fare that is locally procured and beautifully prepared and presented.
In Fairfield County, Norwalk’s Even Hotel’s Restaurant, Cork & Kale will be open for dinner Christmas Eve from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. This restaurant features heart healthy, gluten-free simple and natural entree choices. Here, it is all about good food and moderation. As a holiday special, the bar will be offering half off on all signature cocktails, house wine, spirits and bottled beer with the purchase of any entree from 5 p.m. – 10 p.m.
