On Wednesday night, Ben Affleck made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live to debut the second official trailer for the highly-anticipated juggernaut that is Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The new trailer (attached above) runs for three minutes and gives fans a much more detailed glimpse into the contents of the film – perhaps too much.
The trailer opens with Clark Kent (Henry Cavill) and Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) – Superman and Batman, respectively – meeting for the very first time at an event held by Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg). This is the first time these characters have ever interacted together in a live-action film and immediately sets the tension with a conversation questioning whether or not the existence of their superhero alter egos is good for humanity. As Clark questions the morality of the Batman, Bruce rebuts with his distrust of ‘freaks that dress like clowns’ (an obvious reference to Batman’s greatest foe, The Joker, who will be portrayed by Jared Leto in 2016’s Suicide Squad).
What follows is a series of action shots and narration that continues to tease the epic fight of the film’s namesake. Luthor states that the oldest lie in America is ‘that power can be innocent,’ implying that Superman’s duty to protect Earth is bound to take a harmful turn. Voiceover cut with alternate shots from the destructive battle in Metropolis between the ‘Man of Steel’ and General Zod (seen from Bruce Wayne’s perspective) reinforces this idea when Batman says that ‘[he] brought the war to us.’
The central theme of this film is humanity’s distrust of Superman after the events of 2013’s Man of Steel, and that theme reaches its apex with the reveal of the villain that initiates the dawn of the eventual Justice League – Doomsday. Doomsday looks to be a creation of Lex Luthor’s distrust of Superman, as footage is shown of Luthor recovering General Zod’s body and infusing his power to create the thing that will end the Kryptonian savior of Metropolis. Doomsday is the antagonistic force that unites the combative attention of the battling heroes.
Doomsday proves to be too much for Batman and Superman, which opens the door for another reveal – Wonder Woman’s debut. The Amazonian warrior princess makes her grand entrance by saving the two Superheroes from Doomsday’s powerful outburst, and the titular heroes seemed to be confused by her presence. The fact that Wonder Woman is in the movie is not a big reveal as she has been seen in previous footage. However, it was speculated that Bruce Wayne has a relationship of some kind with Diana Prince and probably knew of her identity as Wonder Woman. Now, it seems that Bruce has never encountered Wonder Woman and perhaps that their relationship isn’t as close as has been rumored.
Smaller reveals like the new Batman voice and deeper glimpses into how Jesse Eisenberg would portray Lex Luthor are natural progressions for a trailer that is released four months before the film hits theaters. However, major reveals like Doomsday may give away too much of the plot (for those who don’t obsess over superhero movie news) and it feels like this trailer gave too much of an outline for how the movie will go.
On one hand, thanks to this trailer, it can be perceived that the mystery surrounding Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is all but gone. Batman fights Superman until Doomsday’s appearance unites them, and Wonder Woman’s introduction sets the stage for 2017’s Justice League, Part One. On the other hand, given that there is a ton of buzz surrounding Ben Affleck’s performance as the ‘caped crusader’, the dynamics of new actors in major roles and the cinematic debuts of new characters (i.e. Wonder Woman) should be enough to draw in movie-goers and, potentially, over one billion dollars worldwide.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, directed by Zack Snyder (300, Man of Steel) hits theaters on March 25, 2016.
