Demarest (9th seed) defeated Queen of Peace (8th seed) with a shot at the buzzer, 69-68, to earn their way to the third round of the BCWCA’s Bergen County Tournament. Demarest will take on Immaculate Conception in the next round.
The first quarter ended with Demarest in the lead 24-20.
The high-scoring quarter can be attributed to the John Stockton-Karl Malone type play of Queen of Peace’s Asonah Alexander and Raven Farley-Clark. To any NBA fan during this Utah Jazz era it needs no explanation, but Alexander did a great job of attacking the basket, drawing defenders, and dishing off to Farley-Clark. She was also able to engage defenders and find open teammates on the wing. When left open she made the defense pay. Alexander had 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 steals, and 18 points. Farley-Clark had 11 rebounds, 2 blocked shots, and 13 points.
Demarest was able to score 24 points against the pressure defense of Queen of Peace due to the scoring styles of Victoria Concoran. She had 16 of the 24 points in the first quarter, which included two three-point shots, three lay-ups, and was 4 for 4 from the foul line. Victoria Concoran finished the game with 36 points, along with 3 rebounds, 4 blocked shots, and 3 assists.
At the half-time Demarest led 39-34. Queen of Peace’s Dominique “Dee Dee” Salas is a strong lefty who is deadly from the three. She had 1 rebound, 1 assist, and 8 points. Veronica Concoran was a strong defender inside. She boxed out to help teammates get rebounds. She had 2 rebounds, 1 steal, and 9 points.
With 4:25 left in the third quarter Alexander hit a three point shot to give Queen of Peace their first lead of the game, 44-43. On the next possession Alexander attacked the basket and dished to Farley-Clark for another quick 2. Queen of Peace then stole the ball during the press and Sydney Watkins hit a jump shot just above the short corner. Watkins had 3 rebounds, 1 assist, and 6 points. At 3:36 Demarest called a time-out while Queen of Peace had the lead, 48-43.
Queen of Peace’s D’Aviyon Magazine is a good shooter. She had 3 rebounds, 1 steal, and 11 points. At the end of the third quarter Queen of Peace led 53-49.
Demarest’s Mackenzie Press had 2 rebounds and 8 points, but what she did in the fourth quarter will last in everyone’s memories. With 1:10 left she tied the game, 64-64. Queen of Peace’s Farley-Clark responded with a lay-up to earn the lead back, 66-64. Queen of Peace then stole the ball and Forever Toppin attacked the basket and drew the foul. With :48 remaining she made both foul shots, 68-64.
Queen of Peace stole the ball back again with :40.4 remaining. They were fouled; Queen of Peace missed the foul shot, and Demarest rebounded the ball. With :14 left Victoria Concoran hit a three point shot to shorten the lead, 68-67. Demarest once again sent Queen of Peace to the line and rebounded a missed foul shot. Brianna Tarabocchia pushed the ball for the fast break. Tarabocchia finished with 13 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists, and 15 points. Once Tarabocchia got into the paint she passed out to Press who was cutting towards the short corner. Press hit the jump shot at the buzzer to give Demarest the two points they needed to win the game.
