The 88th Academy Awards ceremony, commonly known as the OSCARS will take place on February 28, 2016, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California to honor the very best in motion pictures for 2015. Awards are given out in categories such as Best Actor, Best Director, Best Picture, and 21 other categories.
The twinkle of Tinseltown exists for most of us only through the warm glow of our televisions and multi-plex screens, so while we listen to find out who Rachel McAdams or Rooney Mara are wearing, and watching to see if Leonardo DiCaprio finally ends his OSCAR cold streak by winning Best Actor, many viewers will be hosting their own OSCAR parties inviting over friends for food and fine cocktails.
Leonardo DiCaprio plays frontiersman Hugh Glass as an 1820s fur trapper. Glass fights for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by members of his hunting team. This biting cocktail named the Bear Claw is in honor of Leo’s performance.
- 2 parts Maker’s Mark Bourbon
- ¼ part Cherry Heering
- 1 dash Chocolate Mole Bitters
- 1 2×2 cola cube*
- ¾ part soda water
- Orange swath
Place one cola cube into a short rocks glass; add Maker’s Mark, bitters, and soda water. Drizzle Cheery Herring over the top of the ice cube (which will slowly sink to the bottom of the cocktail for bloody effect!); stir briefly to incorporate and express an orange swath over the surface of the drink. *Cola cube: Freeze Mexican Coca-Cola overnight in a 2×2 ice cube tray.
Long before customers could “1-click order” from Amazon, QVC was the way shop from the comfort of home in your bunny slippers; items ranging from personal humidifiers to touch base lamps sold by the thousands on this cable shopping network. “Joy” is the story of Joy Mangano the brain behind the Miracle Mop. Jennifer Lawrence stars in the title role and is nominated for a Best Actress award. The Spill-Proof Shot created by Niccole Trzaska honors her performance.
These spill-proof gelatin shots are best when made ahead of time for your viewing party.
The Spill-Proof Shot
- Makes 12-14 gelatin shots
- 5 ounces Ménage à Trois Straight Vodka
- 5 ounces water
- 5 ounces Tres Agaves Margarita Mix
- 1 Packet of Gelatin
Mix all ingredients until smooth and no bubbles appear. Pour into gelatin molds in the shape of your choice. Set in refrigerator until it becomes a gel (Gelatin is neither a solid nor a liquid it is both. So the higher the alcohol the thinner the mixture will be)
“Mad Max: Fury Road” is nominated for Best Picture; this dystopian look at earth following a nuclear holocaust is palpitation-inducing fun. This eponymous film shows movie-goers what can happen when society breaks down and only those with the most ruthless of characters rule over the fearful.
If there’s one thing Mad Max and Furiosa could have used after their high-speed chase through the desert, it could’ve been a refreshing ice cold drink to take the edge off. In this cocktail, the ice cube is the star, and is also a nod to the skull-like mask worn by the merciless villain Immortan Joe.

The Furious Skull
- 1 ½ parts Sugar Island Spiced Rum
- ¾ part sweet vermouth
- 1 dash Angostura bitters
- 1 Campari ice cube*
In a short rocks glass, combine Sugar Island Rum, sweet vermouth and dash of Angostura bitters. Place the Campari ice cube in glass and if desired, garnish with a SMALL pinch of pink salt. As the salt hits the cube, it will spur the Campari cube to melt.
*Campari ice cube: Overnight, freeze a mixture of Campari and water in a skull-shaped mold, at a ratio close to 50:50
Cheers to you and your OSCAR party, and remember to always drink responsibly.
