Oh deer! A deer jumps through a school window in New Jersey? The confused deer found itself surrounded by desks, chairs, a water cooler – and wide-eyed faculty members, who of course, reacted in amazement like you-know-what caught in the headlights. Offices at the North Arlington Middle School were ransacked by a baffled buck, which dashed through a window and ended up in the student dean’s office, ostensibly to receive its detention slip.
Reports New Jersey Online on Feb. 27: “Police and Bergen County Animal Control officers were called to the school Friday afternoon when the large doe, estimated to be about a year old, jumped through a first floor window and landed in the main office.”
Quick thinking staff members slammed the dean’s office door shut, trapping the alarmed deer inside. While they awaited animal control officers, the 150-pound buck, estimated to only a year old, was heard scattering papers and ramming into the wall.
“They basically shut the door and the animal was content,” commented School Board President George McDermott. “Everybody ran out.”
Students were being dismissed for the day when the deer came crashing though. One teacher dubbed it a hands-on education from Mother Nature, saying: “There were a lot of kids who basically got scared, he said, according to NBC12. “Right through that window over there you can see hair on it and the hoof prints on it. It went right through the window. Scared our staff that was inside.”
Officers safely tranquilized the deer, wrapped it in a blanket and took it back to the woods. The deer was not injured; no one inside of the school was injured either. ABC7 carried a photo of the deer about to smash through the small window, and another photo of the tranquilized deer, wrapped up in a blanket being carried out on a dolly.
