A young male deer jumped through the window of the Kingsport post office building in Downtown Kingsport, according to a Wednesday report on Kingsport Times News. The incident happened on Tuesday and left the responding police officers in a state of amazement. The aftermath at the building on West Center Street was described as similar to a crime scene. The most experienced officer among them had never seen anything like it.
The deer was seen running down Clay Street before jumping into the window. What a sight that must have been for onlookers. The presence of deer in the outlying areas of Kingsport, especially in subdivisions adjoining Warriors State Park, is not uncommon, but a deer downtown is quite unusual.
WJHL.com also carried the story. They reported that the building had previously been for sale, but it was taken off the market on Wednesday after the incident left the building in need of extensive repair. No customers were in the building at 7:30 pm when the deer made his entry through the window and jumped the counter. Evidently panicked at its inability to find a way out, the animal did a significant amount of damage.
When the deer was found, he was in the mail sorting room. It is not known whether some mail recipients will receive letters with an unusual smell or not. Sadly, the confused deer was badly cut and injured from the shattered glass. It was necessary to humanely euthanize the little deer. Although the deer was not a large animal, he sure made a big mess at the Kingsport Post Office.
