The most exciting thing happening in the restaurant world of DC currently is the opening of an epic number of new restaurants. Several DC neighborhoods have seen new dining and imbibing venues open up since the advent of 2016. Below is a description of some of these new hots spots, in no specific order.
Mulebone: Eatonville is out and Mulebone is in! Andy Shallal of Busboys and Poets has changed the look and menu, which now features an exciting cocktail menu and southern dishes like black eyed pea fritters, deviled eggs, BBQ Brussel sprouts, skillet mac n cheese, and more. Very vegetarian friendly like all of Shallal’s restaurants! Be sure to end your meal with their coconut cake.
Sovereign: This new Belgian/Dutch spot has opened up in Georgetown. Salads, flame cakes, and of course famous Belgian frites will be in abundance! Beer is the focus of the beverage program.
Tail Up Goat: A new venture from some of the former staff members of Komi of Little Serow. The sophisticated menu has something for everyone.
Declaration: This is another venture from the Lincoln/Teddy & the Bully Bar team. The menu focuses on gourmet pizzas, but also has bar snacks like pickled veggies and appetizers which salads.
Columbia Room: Derek Brown’s famous cocktail bar has finally reopened! Choose from a 3 course tasting menu which includes 3 cocktails paired with snacks for $75 or a spirit or champagne flight for $100 a person.
Hank’s Pasta Bar: This new Alexandria restaurant is offering no less than 16 housemade pastas every day! Each one is served in a different sauce. Crostini, small plates like housemade ricotta and burrata salad, and sides such as truffled polenta are also being served.
Quarter + Glory: Head over to U Street soon to have a cocktail at this new bar, which just started happy hour. Their cocktail menu looks incredibly enticing and pictures of the venue show a gorgeous spot with glowing lights, modern fixtures, and exposed brick.
Hawthorne: U Street’s Tabaq has shuttered and newcomer Hawthorne has taken over the spot. The four level venue is offering a bistro menu with salads, sandwiches, and appetizers like patatas bravas and hummus, and has four different bars. Brunch service will be offered on the rooftop.
Chaia Tacos: This cute vegetarian taco shop is now open in Georgetown, and is offering great Mexican fare.
SeoulSpice: This place is going to become your healthy, fast-food Korean go-to joint. Choose from your choice of a rice bowl, salad, tacos, or korito, and fill with your choice of ingredients. They have everything from avocado to tofu to corn to kimchi. Then, top with sriracha dressing or even a cilantro lime ranch, a nod to the owner’s time spent in Houston.
Palatte 22: Palette 22 will encourage guests to engage their visual senses and culinary palate, through experiencing worldly cuisine and fine art in new and exciting ways. The 206-seat restaurant has been designed as a contemporary showcase for food and art, with a raw and industrial feel. Exhibition areas will display local artists’ work, while some artists will create artwork on-site. Additionally, guests will be able to watch as skilled chefs cook in an open theater kitchen, creating enticing dishes from around the globe. Palette 22 will serve lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch, with a weekday happy hour. The seasonally driven menu consists of more than thirty small plate offerings inspired by street food, culinary traditions, key ingredients, and flavor profiles with diverse cultural influences.
