If you find yourself in the Pittsburgh area this holiday season make sure you make a stop at the Kennywood Amusement Park in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania because it is hard to beat the combination of amusement park rides, a display of magnificent holiday lights and a huge array of fun, family-friendly activities. Kennywood’s holiday spectacular is being offered on December 18, 19, 20, 26 and 27. It is approximately a 2.5 hour drive from Cleveland.
Located 10 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, Kennywood is presenting their annual Holiday Light Show featuring more than 1.5 million dazzling lights timed to a soundtrack of classic holiday songs. The show runs every 30 minutes each evening around the lagoon. Interesting Note: The Kennywood lights are connected and powered by more than 12 miles of extension cords.
New this year will be a 90 foot tall Christmas tree adorned with more than 250,000 LED lights. It has been deemed the tallest tree in Pennsylvania. A ceremonial lighting of the tree will be held each evening at 5:20 p.m.
One thing that sets Kennywood’s holiday event from other holiday events is the opportunity for visitors to also enjoy several of the park’s rides which are open for the event. The rides include the Merry-Go-Round, Ghostwood Estate, the Turtle, the Gingerbread Express train and several rides in Kiddieland. Of course, Santa will be there to meet and greet all visitors. Other activities with Santa include cookie decorating, photo opportunities and a nightly reading of “The Night Before Christmas.”
Also new this year will be “The Polar Express – A 4D Experience,” a 15 minute spin-off of the classic holiday movie being shown in the park’s new 4D theater. Area choral groups will be providing free, live musical entertainment each evening.
Throughout the park there will be several food stands open for business serving items like kettle corn, s’mores funnel cakes, Potato Patch fries and a variety of hot beverages which will be available for purchase. Hours for the Kennywood Holiday Light Show event are 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. Admission is $17.99 per person at the gate. Admission for seniors (65+) is $15.99. Children 2 and under are free. Parking is free.
