Those typical Spring Break activities such as ski trips or beach trips can mean budget-busting travel expenses for families. Taking a beach trip to South Padre or a winter escape to Colorado can be crowded as well as expensive this month. So look for local day trips close to San Antonio that offer fun family time and are easy on the wallet. With the low cost of gas it is more economical to drive than fly.
It is a short drive from San Antonio to Boerne, Texas following IH 10 West and head into Main Street. This German town is full of unique shops and restaurants in the downtown area that will keep everyone busy. There is kayaking on Boerne Lake, a farmers market at Herff Farm or watch the ducks at Cibolo Creek. This is a popular town for festivals during the year so check the events calendar. One of the favorite events during Fiesta week is the Texas Corvette Association Annual Car Show. It is held this year on Saturday April 16 with free admission and Main Street is closed to traffic while these cool cars are are display.
If you are looking for a real cowboy experience, head to Bandera, Texas. This western town is close to Medina Lake and a short drive on Bandera Road. The town is called “the cowboy capital of the world” and is surrounded by dude ranches and horse riding trails. Flying L Ranch offers chuck wagon dinners and there are gunfighter show-downs to bring out your pioneer spirit. The scenic drive to Lost Maples is a favorite during the Fall season.
Going north on Interstate 35 will bring you to Gruene, Texas for a variety of music and shops and restaurants. One of the famous landmarks is Gruene Hall for live music and the oldest dance hall in Texas. Check the calendar for the shows and performers. Other activities in the area include touring the local wineries, antique shopping, rafting on the Guadalupe River and eating at the Gristmill River Restaurant. The calendar of events will give you a good reason to make the short drive from San Antonio.
