On this week’s episode of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Mama Ru dropped a bomb on the contestants (and the viewers) when she declared that neither Dax Exclamationpoint (from Savannah, GA) nor Laila McQueen (from Gloucester, MA) “survived that lip sync”of “I Will Survive” and asked both of them to sashay away. byteclay.com caught up with the two queens to get their reactions.
byteclay.com: What were you thinking when the double elimination happened?
Dax: We were just both crushed. I didn’t believe what was actually happening, I was like no, there’s no way we’re doing this right now. It was a weird and crushing experience.
Laila: It was hard to think of anything, it was like a broken CD and it kept skipping and all I kept hearing in my head was RuPaul telling us “I’m sorry neither of you survived that, you both have to sashay away.” That’s all that was going through my head, over and over again.
byteclay.com: Do you have any regrets?
Dax: I wish that I could’ve had a little more time. I just wish I had the chance to actually take the critiques, digest them, internalize them and then revamp from there. I would’ve done that. I was down to get back into the workroom and fix whatever they wanted me to. I feel like Laila got that chance originally and then I didn’t. It just ended, done, bye. I also wouldn’t have worn that dress, obviously.
Laila: I regret not being more upfront and more in the judges’ faces but I’ve never done TV before, I’m a shy guy from a small city. It’s a little hard to do it on the spot but I’m going to try to not think of too many regrets going forward with this new career.
byteclay.com: What challenges were your most looking forward that you think you would have killed had you been there?
Dax: I was really looking forward to any design challenges really. Any challenge to make something, that’s what I really came to do, to create and do good work.
Laila: I think if we got the opportunity for another sewing challenge, if we had a little more time for one, [I was most looking forward to that]. I like to make outfits. [Also], I’ve always loved the makeover challenge every season, I think that’s so much fun. I would’ve loved to do that.
byteclay.com: Who were you planning to do for “Snatch Game?
Dax: I was going to do Scary Spice. Not Mel B., but literally Scary Spice like fresh out of “Spice World.” I couldn’t do Storm, she’s not really funny.
Laila: I brought three options just in case. I brought Betsey Johnson, [Long Island Medium] Theresa Caputo and Courtney Love. I auditioned with Courtney Love and I really love Theresa but I know two girls in season seven said they were going to do her, so I was leaning most towards Betsey Johnson.
byteclay.com: So what’s next for you?
Dax: I’m just trying to keep things in motion. I have shows lined up for the rest of the year pretty much. I’m just going to keep moving, producing more costumes, putting more numbers together, hopefully touring conventions and working on a graphic novel. Everything really.
Laila: [Even though] for the time being I’m unfortunately still living in my family’s basement because the TV money hasn’t come in yet, I am going to try and start doing the most art I possibly can, in every which medium: in performing, in videos, in paintings, whatever I can do. I’m not limiting myself to any possibilities and I plan to do shows all over. I have tons of booking, [including in the U.K]. I [may have] just graduated college but I [plan] to show people who I am and the art I do in every way possible.
Both Laila and Dax will be appearing at RuPaul’s DragCon May 7th and 8th in Los Angeles.
