“Dancing With the Stars” returned to ABC on Monday, March 21 with a brand new cast of celebrities and professional dancers. Season 22 aired in a two-hour premiere with each of the couples hitting America’s biggest dance floor performing either a cha-cha, foxtrot, tango, quickstep or jive. Celebrities received scores ranging from 13-23 out of a possible 30.
According to E! Online, “Real Housewives of Atlanta’s” Kim Fields and her partner, Sasha Farber, were the first to dance. They danced the cha-cha to Fleur East’s upbeat “Sax.” Kim said the only cha-cha she knew to do before was the one done at weddings. She and Sasha received a score of 20 out of 30. Next up were Paige VanZant and Mark Ballas who danced the foxtrot to Jess Glynne’s “Ain’t Got Far to Go.” They received a score of 21.
Former quarterback Doug Flutie with partner Karina Smirnoff danced to Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline.” Their score was only 15. This season, Keo Motsepe might survive on the show longer than he has in previous seasons because he has a fairly good dancing partner with “Fuller House” actress Jodie Sweetin. They danced the tango to Demi Lovato’s “Confident” and received a score of 20. Marla Maples, the former wife of Donald Trump, was partnered with Tony Dovolani. They danced the quickstep to “Sparkling Diamonds” from the “Moulin Rouge” soundtrack and received a score of 21.
Singer Wanya Morris and partner Lindsay Arnold danced to his group Boyz II Men’s song “Motownphilly.” They were the first to get the high score of 23. Then “Good Morning America’s” Ginger Zee and Val Chmerkovskiy danced the jive to “Move” from “Dreamgirls.” They, too, received a score of 23. Actress Mischa Barton and Artem Chigvintsev danced the tango to the Weeknd’s “In the Night” and received a score of 16.
Model and actor Nyle DiMarco danced the cha-cha to “Cake by the Ocean” by DNCE. He admitted that he can hear nothing, and he dances to the vibrations and by following the lead of his partner Peta Murgatroyd. They received 23, one of the top scores. TV Line says Nyle and Peta were the best of the night. Denver Broncos’ Von Miller danced the foxtrot with Season 19 winner Witney Carson. Their dance to Flo Rida’s “My House” earned them a score of 21.
Football player Antonio Brown and Sharna Burgess did the quickstep to “Bad Man” by Pitbull. Their score was 21. Geraldo Rivera, the oldest celebrity at 72, and Edyta Śliwińska did the cha-cha to “Treasure” by Bruno Mars and received 13 points, the lowest score of the night. Hopefully, they will not be the first to be eliminated because Edyta just returned after a six-year absence.
This is the first season a Hough is not on “Dancing with the Stars.” Julianne Hough did not return as a judge and her brother, six-time champion Derek Hough, also did not return. However, head judge Len Goodman did return after a year’s absence. Judges Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli returned as well as hosts Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews.
