In Picayune, MS, the mirror ball trophies are polished, ready to hand to the winners. The five-course meal by Chef Christopher Case has been planned. Fourteen couples are waiting to show their dancing skills to a sold-out crowd. This is the second Dancing with the Relay Stars of Pearl River County event, scheduled for Saturday, March 12, 2016.
Last year’s debut event, held at Southern Char Steakhouse in Picayune sold out all 150 tickets in a single day. It was the first time the event was conducted in the state. This year, the competition moves to The Centraplex, 1308 S. Haugh St., Picayune, which allowed for 350 tickets at $50 per ticket or $450 per table of ten.
The dance competition serves as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. The money raised goes toward the organization’s missions: cancer education, promotion of preventative measures and research, seeking treatments and cures for all types of cancer. The name derives from the ACS signature annual fundraiser, Relay for Life.
Each couple will have up to three minutes to dance to the music and choreography of their choice. Some of the dancers will be dancing in memory or honor of loved ones who died. Organizer Lisa Lee notes that some competitors have hired professional choreographers in their quest for one of the three mirror ball trophies at stake.
One of the trophies will go to the couple selected as best by the judges brought in for the event. A second trophy honors the People’s Choice Award-the couple raising the most funds toward the cause. Couples can solicit donations prior to the event as well as collect additional donations on the evening of the competition. The third trophy goes to the couple selected by the vote of audience judges.
In addition to the competitive dancers, entertainment includes Ms. Senior America 2016, Dr. Barbara Mauldin; Gay Polk-Payton from Hattiesburg, singing; music by Cooper Hill Entertainment and a demonstration of dancing by a youthful bounce group will start the festivities. Chef Case will bring his Old School Eats school bus into the venue to add to the fun.
Although this year’s competition has sold out, the Pearl River County chapter of Relay for Life offers many fun activities throughout the year for the cause of fighting cancer. Mark your calendar now for upcoming events such as the Crowns for a Cure beauty pageant (April 2) and Light Up the Night Glow Run 2016 (May 14). Join the fight and join the fun.
