The series reaches its penultimate episode. Just like its predecessor, this one puts the focus on Lenalee, as both she and Komui reflect on their lot in life. It seems like an odd place to put this kind of character introspection, but within the confines of the episode, it actually makes a lot of sense and ends up working rather well.
While the idea of Lenalee getting her innocence back was teased last episode, this one follows through. There is a bit of a bizarre ritual involved as the innocence turns to liquid, prompting her to drink it. Some will immediately wonder what would happen in 12 hours after it passed through her digestive system, (un?)fortunately, the episode dodges that by having the effects take hold immediately.
Her feet start to bleed profusely, but the blood forms new boots that she can use. Could she have just rubbed the liquid on her feet and bypassed all of that? Likely not, seeing as the mixture results in even greater synchronization, speed capability, and power when she does enter combat with the level four akuma. Even she notes how much more powerful her new boots are compared to her old ones.
Really, the highlight of the episode is seeing Lenalee fighting again. It’s been a long time coming, but the payoff was worth it in many respects. Having more episodes to see her new power set would have been nice, but what can you do?
Allen does back her up to the best of his ability, but he was already seriously wounded to the point where his body is only mobile because his innocence armor is doing most of the moving for him. Still, the two prove to be a formidable team, as the seemingly unstoppable monster is suddenly thrust to the losing end of the fight.
Where the last episode ended with Lenalee at the mercy of the monster, this one ends with her triumphantly ramming Allen’s sword through it with her new super-boots. It’s a nice contrast.
As an episode, this is a decent one. There’s a nice balance between character and action. The viewer’s patience regarding Lenalee is also rewarded as she returns to form in glorious fashion.
As a precursor to the series finale, however, it makes some strange choices. As a result, it might feel a bit lackluster. One can surmise that they didn’t know that this was so close to the end as none of the over-arcing plot lines are addressed in any capacity. At the very least, the latest big bad was defeated. Thus, the viewer can enjoy that moment of triumph and savor the fact that Lenalee got one last chance to shine before the curtain descended.
