Maybe he wanted to get into politics all along.
Curt Schilling’s Facebook and Twitter behavior while on the payroll of ESPN was more suited for Breitbart, The Drudge Report or some other right wing propaganda website. If he wants to stay on television, there is always Fox News or Newsmax.
Schilling was permanently deleted from the Disney owned sports giant’s website today in what can only be described as the straw that broke the camel’s back. He posted yet another tasteless meme, this one of an ugly man in a wig and dressed “provocatively” with the words:
LET HIM IN! To the restroom with your daughter or else you’re a narrow-minded, judgmental, unloving, racist bigot who needs to die!!!
The word “die” was in red letters.
The 49-year old former Red Sox legend had previously been suspended from covering regular season and playoff games last year for comments comparing Muslims to Nazis. He was already on thin ice yet he still decided to show more of his ignorance.
As usual, it didn’t take long for a denial and the removal of the meme. Schilling wrote, “This latest brew ha ha is beyond hilarious. I didn’t post that ugly looking picture. I made a comment about the basic functionality of men’s and women’s restrooms, period.” Regardless, Disney/ESPN had already made up their mind after the anti-transgender post.
“ESPN is an inclusive company,” ESPN said in a statement. “Curt Schilling has been advised that his conduct was unacceptable and his employment with ESPN has been terminated.”
Schilling’s meme wasn’t the only thing that got him fired. He apparently added the following comment to it: “A man is a man no matter what they call themselves” and “Now you need laws telling us differently? Pathetic.”
Schilling also wandered into the political circle when he made comments about Hillary Clinton saying in a radio interview she “should be buried under a jail somewhere.”
The obvious point here is that no one is denying Shilling’s right to say anything he wants, no matter how stupid or insensitive. Unfortunately, when he crossed his employer after being warned numerous times, he deserved what he got. Now he is free to spew whatever hatred he wants because he only has to answer to himself. As an unemployed jerk.
