Last week marked the release of Street Fighter V, the long awaited 5th chapter of the Capcom flagship fighting game franchise. While there were issues with the online experience and other features, the game itself has provided a new outlet for the Fighting Game Community to express themselves on the big stage. From the outset, Gamestop started with midnight release events. From there you had first day tournaments, and even more through the end of the week. In Houston, there were 4 big tournaments, and another one in Dallas.
On Tuesday, Neil’s Bahr and GameGuys both held tournaments for SFV. Around 35 entered the tournament at Neil’s, ending with J24X winning against Pugilist Penguin. Meanwhile, over at Gameguys, 40 players entered with SF4 and UMvC3/GG stalwarts WTHamad against UA|Jan in the finals. Hamad knocked Jan into the losers bracket by winning the winners final, but Jan came back and won both sets of the grand finals to take the tournament. On Friday GameGuys held their inaugural weekly tournament for SFV, this one was also won by Jan, this time over Samboner. Saturday. Dallas’ Versus Gameplay hosted Dtown Beatdown, which held tournaments for various games, but the highlight was the largest SFV tournament of the week in Texas, 130 players. Dallas, Houston, and Austin were well represented in the top 8. In the finals were UA|Jan vs Danke from Austin. Both players had just defeated the last Dallas player, Arban, in the winners final, and losers final respectively. Jan would win yet another tournament, needing only the first set of the grand finals 3-1.
Back in Houston, Insomnia VGC hosted another SFV tournament at Walter’s Downtown. This was a capped 128 bracket that actually filled up before the event started. Jan was looking to add another title in an impressive first week, but would have to take the long route through the losers bracket as he was upset by one of the Mortal Kombat players Frank “UA Showtime” Occhione. Jan would still qualify out of his pool in losers, after getting his revenge on Showtime. Joining him were Hamad, BOTB Vagabond, Saintvil, EX Jermaine, Sweet Daddy Good Lo, KDillon, and Adnan from Dallas. While Hamad and Vagabond would end up in the winners final, Jan would clean up the losers bracket and await his next match in the losers final. Vagabond was able to defeat Hamad, sending him to face Jan. There Jan defeated Hamad again, and was now trying for his straight 4th tournament win. However, Vagabond’s Necalli was able to hold off Jan’s Birdie to take home the championship. Still it was an impressive week for Jan, as he established himself as an early favorite for Texas Showdown and future tournaments for SFV.
