Police in Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, are looking into a domestic violence complaint lodged against Johnny Manziel, 23, quarterback for the NFL’s Cleveland Browns. Manziel’s ex-girlfriend, Colleen Crowley, also 23, filed the complaint on February 5. Crowley stated that her quarterback boyfriend struck her several times on January 30, “at an upscale hotel in Dallas and again on the ride to her apartment,” according to CNN.
Police are investigating the complaint lodged against the embattled 2012 Heisman Trophy winner and say that they’re still trying to determine whether or not to file charges. Currently police are saying that there’s no hard evidence that Manziel physically assaulted Crowley who lives in Fort Worth.
Manziel’s agent, Erik Burkhardt, announced that he has dropped the quarterback as his client. On Friday Burkhardt said that the move to release Manziel came “after several emotional and very personal discussions with his family, his doctors and (Manziel) himself,” according to a quote from CNN.
The Cleveland Browns’ management released a statement last week saying that “We’ve been clear about expectations for our players on and off the field. Johnny’s continual involvement in incidents that run counter to those expectations undermines the hard work of his teammates and the reputation of our organization. His status with our team will be addressed when permitted by league rules. We will have no further comment at this time.” Multiple news agencies are reporting that Manziel’s time with the Browns is quickly coming to a close.
The quarterback’s father fears for his son’s life and worries that if Johnny doesn’t get professional help immediately, he doesn’t have long to live. MSN quoted concerned dad Paul Manziel as saying “I truly believe if they can’t get him help, he won’t live to see his 24th birthday.”
The elder Manziel said that he tried unsuccessfully on several occasions this past week to have his son admit himself to a rehab facility. Johnny Manziel declined those requests to get help or to go into rehab. The father worries that his son is suicidal.
Manziel did attend an alcohol- and drug-treatment facility last year but isn’t willing at this time to go back inside. Manziel told TMZ Sports on Thursday that he never hit his ex-girlfriend. On Friday, TMZ reported that Crowley filed for a protective order against Manziel. For more on Johnny Manziel’s latest woes, seethe video accompanying this article.
