Columbus’ COSI puts LEGO in the spotlight

by byte clay

Super fans of all ages (and yes, there are plenty of you older fans out there) of the LEGO bricks are in for a real treat when they venture to COSI in Columbus, Ohio to see the special “LEGO Travel Adventure Asks “What Will You Build?” exhibit running from now through May 8. Columbus is approximately a 2 hour drive from Cleveland.

This family-friendly, hands-on, educational extravaganza features millions of LEGO bricks and a multitude of creative, interactive activities for every family member to enjoy. The LEGO Travel Adventure” exhibit features the chance to build LEGO brick vehicles, jumping into the cockpit of a giant LEGO vehicle, discovering travel inventions of the past and seeing huge models that have been built by professional LEGO builders.

Visitors are invited to create, plan and build vehicles out of the LEGO bricks that are capable of driving, floating or flying (or maybe all three!) and capable of moving through all kinds of terrain including oceans, mountains, deserts and jungles in exotic locations all over the world. Age-appropriate build tables will be available complete with LEGO system bricks and LEGO DUPLO bricks so that the children can create and build their own vehicles, limited only by their imagination. Dioramas will also be featured in the exhibit showing locations like Hawaii, Florida, Paris and San Francisco which will serve as inspiration for creating vehicles. Will your vehicle have wheels, masts or wings — or something even more creative? The possibilities are endless.

And don’t miss the LEGO Travel Adventure creations by LEGO Master Builders including recreations of the building of the first Model T, the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk, the driving of the Gold Spike in the Transcontinental Railroad and an ocean liner. And check out the diorama featuring the Travel Adventure Vehicle (T.A.V.), a hybrid LEGO brick vehicle specifically created by LEGO Master Builder Stephen Gerling for this exhibit. Make sure your children have their photos taken behind the wheel of a children-size race car created entirely out of LEGO DUPLO bricks.

Current hours for COSI are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Wednesday – Sunday and 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. on the last Friday of each month. COSI is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. General Admission is $19 for adults and $14 for youth (2-12).
