There comes a time in every man’s life when he must choose which path is best for him. It was last night that young Jesus Vasquez, Jr. made the decision to hang up his boxing gloves, leaving the arena as a competitor on his own terms after a stellar amateur career. While easily considered a talent that could be groomed as a rising professional, Vasquez decided to end his boxing career as an amateur. Jesus is/was a class act in every way imaginable. It is a sad but an even happier time for me to watch this young man move on in life. I am proud to say I have known Jesus Vasquez, Jr. for many years and him becoming successful in whatever path he now chooses is a given. His destiny is far from determined and retiring from the sport as a boxer was his own decision. He is already a committed father to a young baby girl and will make a fantastic boxing coach and mentor when he decides the time is right. Best of luck, Jose Vasquez, Jr!
In his own words… ‘After months of resting and thinking, I have come to a decision that I will retire as an amateur, and not proceed to a professional career. These past few months have been hard for me I kept going back and forth on whether or not I wanted to continue to box. The truth is I love the sport and I still want to be a part of boxing, boxing is always going to be in my life. But my fighting days are over. My amateur career consisted of 169 amateur fights. I been fighting since I was 10 years old. 4X national champion, with many state and regional championships. Ranked in the top 2 and 3 in two weight classes for the past 4 years (have proof). Won a bronze medal in the Olympic trials 1 and was part of the WSB team for the USA. I am content with my amateur career and have decided to retire as an amateur. I want to be remembered as a boxer who only boxed for the love of the sport. Thank you to all the people who supported me throughout the years, I also wanna thank every coach I ever worked with, I wanna thank my teammates who pushed me extra hard and I wanna thank GOD for giving me the talent and always keeping me safe in the ring! Man what can I say I’m gonna miss it For sure I got to travel all over the country and some parts of the world. I got into school because of boxing, received scholarships through boxing! But it’s not over. I will be around boxing forever. I’ll see where life takes me from here. Thank you everyone and God Bless’!
