The NCAA Tournament in college basketball dates back to 1939. Here is a list of the college basketball teams that have won the NCAA Tournament the most times. In an interesting bit of trivia, Oregon won the first NCAA Tournament but has never won since and the Ducks are a #1 seed in the 2016 NCAA Tournament.
All teams that have won the NCAA Tournament at least twice are listed with the years they won and comments. Which college basketball team has been the most successful at winning the NCAA Tournament over the last 20 years? The answer is below in the comments as one of these teams won all their titles within the last 20 years (Hint – not Duke).
1. UCLA – 11 NCAA Tournament championship wins
The UCLA Bruins easily lead this list having won the NCAA Tournament a record 11 times. The wins came in 1964, 1965, 1967-73, 1975, 1993. UCLA also easily holds the record for most consecutive wins with seven. Hard to see anyone beating that record.
2. Kentucky – 8 wins
The Kentucky Wildcats are second on this list having won the NCAA Tournament eight times. Kentucky’s wins came in 1948, 1949, 1951, 1958, 1978, 1996, 1998, 2012. Given the incredible amount of talent Kentucky has put into the NBA, 19 1st round draft picks since 2010, the Wildcats should have even more NCAA Tournament titles.
T-3. Duke – 5
The Duke Blue Devils are tied for the third most wins with five. Duke’s wins came in 1991, 1992, 2001, 2010, 2015. Mike Krzyzewski has been the coach at Duke for all five NCAA Tournament wins and his success with the program has been an absolute marvel to watch.
T-3. North Carolina – 5 wins
North Carolina is tied with Duke for the third most wins with five. The Tar Heels wins came in 1957, 1982, 1993, 2005, 2009. The 1982 North Carolina championship team had Michael Jordan and James Worthy on it and both are in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Also on the team was Sam Perkins who went on to score 15,324 points in the NBA over 17 seasons.
T-3. Indiana – 5 wins
The Indiana Hoosiers are also tied with Duke and North Carolina for the third most NCAA Tournament wins with five championships. Indiana’s wins came in 1940, 1953, 1976, 1981, 1987. It’s been almost 30 years since the Hoosiers cut down the nets.
6. UConn – 4 wins
The UConn Huskies have won the NCAA Tournament four times and the team deserves special notice because all four wins have come since 1999. UConn’s wins came in 1999, 2004, 2011, 2014. That is the best showing by any team over the last 20 years with Duke the only other team coming close to such excellence in college basketball.
T-7. Louisville – 3 wins
The Louisville Cardinals won the NCAA Tournament in 1980, 1986, 2013. Does the scandal now rocking Louisville’s college basketball program tarnish the 2013 win?
T-7. Kansas – 3 wins
The Kansas Jayhawks won the NCAA Tournament in 1952, 1988, 2008. Kansas has won or shared the Big 12 title in college basketball for the regular season for 11 straight seasons. That’s pretty remarkable in this day and age.
T-9. Florida, Michigan State, North Carolina State, Cincinnati, San Francisco, Oklahoma State – 2 wins each
Florida (2006, 2007), Michigan State (1979, 200), North Carolina State (1974, 1983), Cincinnati (1961, 1962), San Francisco (1955, 1956) and Oklahoma State (1945, 1946) have all won two NCAA titles each to tie for 9th place. Another interesting bit of trivia is that Cincinnati won its two titles after Oscar Robertson had gone on to the NBA in 1960.
