The Cleveland Orchestra Choruses have announced that they will be conducting auditions this spring in preparation for the 2016-2017 season. The auditions are opened to all community members of all ages and are scheduled by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, click HERE.
The Cleveland Orchestra Choruses consist of ‘The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus’, ‘The 2016 Blossom Festival Chorus’, ‘Cleveland Orchestra Children’s Chorus’, and ‘The Children’s Preparatory Chorus’.
Audition schedules are as follows. The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus and the 2016 Blossom Festival Chorus will be holding auditions on April 28, May 5 and May 7, 2016. While open to all, prospective members must have previous choral experience and be able to sight read music. Those wishing to audition are asked to prepare two pieces from the classical literature with each piece approximately two minutes in length with at least one being in a foreign language. An Accompanist will be provided for all auditions.
For anyone wishing to perform with the Chorus in singing the “German Requiem” at Severance Hall on July 8, 2016 an excerpt from Brahms’s “A German Requiem” will be required at the audition. A copy of the work will be sent when the audition is scheduled.
Practices for the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus are held on Monday evenings from 7 to 10 p.m. in Beachwood with some additional Sunday evenings as well as each night during concert weeks. Rehearsals are tentatively scheduled to begin on September 18, 2016 with the season ending on May 14, 2017. The members of COC perform with the Cleveland Orchestra in subscription and Christmas concerts at Severance Hall. Among the works scheduled are major works by Bach, Brahms, Duruflé, Haydn, and Stravinsky.
The Blossom Music Festival Chorus is scheduled to perform the Who’s “Quadrophenia” on August 20, 2016 at the Blossom Music Center. Evening rehearsals are tentatively scheduled for August 8, 2016. Blossom Festival Chorus members are also invited to sing with the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus during the Christmas concerts in December. Those auditioning for the Blossom Festival Chorus may also audition for the “German Requiem” performance with the required excerpt being sent to them when the audition time is confirmed.
The Cleveland Orchestra Children’s Choruses are open to all students in grades 5 through 9 with auditions being held on May 23, June 4 and June 11, 2016. This season marks the 50th anniversary of the Cleveland Orchestra Children’s Chorus (Ann Usher, director). The Children’s Chorus’ mission is to provide musical training in vocal production and choral performance skills. Performances schedule for the upcoming season include “The Nutcracker” at the State Theater at Playhouse Square, the Cleveland Orchestra Christmas Concerts at Severance Hall as well as a special 50thj Anniversary Spring Concert with alumni.
Members of the Children’s Preparatory Chorus (Suzanne Walters, director) will perform two concerts in the upcoming season. Members of the Preparatory Chorus receive initial choral experiences designed to help them develop musical skills while performing in public. The Children’s Choruses rehears on Monday nights with their season beginning in September, 2016 and running through to May, 2017.
