Hair chronically dry? Dull? Stiff? Products not working? Hair breaking? If you answered yes to one or more of these you may be suffering from build-up and need to give your hair a fresh start. If you are a heavy user of stylers like gel, mousse, oil, pomade, a co-washer or infrequent shampooer, clarifying might be for you.
Clarifying your hair can be a simple answer to all your problems. If your hair is dry no matter how much you steam it, moisturize, or deep condition; it may be because there is a layer or two of junk blocking it. Hair needs to be cleansed thoroughly due to all the products we put on it as well as environmental factors like pollution and some shampoos aren’t strong enough to lift those pollutants especially those labeled as “sulfate free”.
A clarifying shampoo is designed to get hair really clean, therefore it should only be used once or twice a month. Some hair textures can get away with clarifying weekly, but in all cases you should follow up with a moisturizing deep conditioner.
Personally, my hair is fine which means it is prone to build up. It is also quite kinky-curly so I have to take extra steps to moisturize it. I have to cleanse it at least once a week, if I don’t my scalp goes crazy and my hair is not nice to me. I have found that my hair and scalp loves to be clarified at least every other week, or twice a month. After a clarifying session, I can then get away with a warm water rinse every two to three days sealed with a light oil to hold in the moisture. Co-washing is something that I have to do in moderation because conditioner can leave residue.
There are plenty of ways to clarify ones hair and scalp including an apple cider vinegar (ACV) rinse, bentonite clay, and of course a store bought shampoo. I like to keep things simple, so I usually just buy some shampoo from the store, my favorites being Suave Daily Naturals Clarifying Shampoo and ORS Creamy Aloe.
After clarifying, because your hair is stripped, you can apply a deep conditioner to infuse some moisture and nutrients back into your hair. I recommend also applying a leave in and a light natural oil especially on the ends. Whenever I do a clarifying session my hair is soft, easy to detangle, has a nice sheen and stays moisturized for days before I need to do a touch up.
If you can’t figure out why your style looks blah or why your favorite products aren’t working, give clarifying a try. Clarifying is great for the summer time when you are in the pool as it can clean off the chlorine from the water.
Your hair and scalp can benefit from the deep cleaning and you will love how much better your hair looks after clarifying. Give it a try at least once a month for a while and see how your hair responds.
