I had the privilege of participating in the Taste of Iceland event held at Cite Restaurant at the top of Lake Point Tower in downtown Chicago.
Let me first start by telling you that the views from the restaurant are absolutely magnificent. The restaurant has 360 degree sweeping panoramic views of the Chicago Skyline, Navy Pier, and Lake Michigan. Although a table by the window would be best, you will have great views from any of their tables.
The upscale Cite Restaurant has been in business at this location for over 40 years. Cite defines elegant dining with incredible views. They do a great job of delivering a quality and intimate dining experience. I can’t think of a better downtown restaurant for a special occasion.
Parking at Lake Point Tower is normally $32.00. However, the cost is reduced to $20.00 with validation from the restaurant.
The inaugural Chicago four-day Taste of Iceland festival took place March 17th through the 20th. Taste of Iceland’s goal was to celebrate and create awareness of the Icelandic culture as well as to promote the launch of Icelandair’s service from Chicago’s O’Hare airport to Reykjavik, Iceland.
Icelandic Chef Thrainn Freyr Vigfusson, Head Chef at Blue Lagoon’s Lava Restaurant and Chef of the Year in Iceland collaborated with the two chefs from Cite to create a four-course Icelandic menu that was both unique and traditional, and yes, very delicious. Chef Vigfusson has won numerous awards and is a leading authority in Iceland’s culinary world.
The Taste of Iceland menu included:
· Icelandic Arctic Char (trout-like fish common to Iceland)
· Wild Caught Icelandic Cod
· Icelandic Free-Range Lamb
All three of these were clearly made by an award winning chef. Flavorful and simply delicious are the best way to describe all of them.
And for dessert:
· Astarpungar (Icelandic equivalent of doughnuts)
· Lemon Ice Cream
· Caramel Chocolate Mousse
· Salt Caramel
The cocktail list that accompanied the main dishes were all made with Reyka Vodka. Bartenders Russell Stuebe and Peter DelaPena did a terrific job of creating four different cocktails that were just outstanding.
· Cucumber Mint Collins
· Framboise Mule
Each of these four drinks had its own style and flavor. I would characterize all of them to be light and spirited.
If you’re looking for an intimate dinner or would like to dine with the Chicago skyline, then Cite is the perfect destination.
If you are interested in exploring unique cultures and with great foods, then Iceland should be on your radar screen!
I encourage you to visit the two websites in the header of this article for more information on both.
