The 2016 edition of CinemaCon, the Official Convention of The National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO), the largest and most important gathering for the worldwide motion picture theater industry, took place at Caesars Palace on April 11- 14. The four day event concluded on Thursday evening, April 14 with the “Big Screen Achievement Awards” ceremony at the Colosseum inside Caesars which honored some of the film industry’s top talent and rising stars. Host for the evening’s festivities was Liz Hernandez of Access Hollywood.
The list of award categories and honorees were:
Female Star of Tomorrow – Gina Rodriguez who was recognized for her work on “Jane The Virgin” and her upcoming role in “Deepwater Horizon” among others
Male Star of Tomorrow -Stephen Amell who is set to break out in Paramount Pictures Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles “Out of the Shadows”.
Breakthrough Director of the Year – Nate Parker who recently was awarded the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at the 2016 Sundance film festival for his new film “Birth of a Nation”
Comedy Stars of the Year – Zac Efron, Anna Kendrick and Adam DeVine who star in the upcoming “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates”
Producer of the Year – Jason Blum, for his body of work which includes “Whiplash”, “The Gift”, “Unfriended”, “Insidious Chapter 3”, “The Visit” and “The Purge” and The Purge: Election Year”.
CinemaCon Icon Award – Susan Sarandon, for her vast body of work beginning back in 1970’s “Joe” and other iconic films such as “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”, “Bull Durham”, “Thelma and Louise” and “Dead Man Walking”.
CinemaCon’s Vanguard Award – Keanu Reeves, for his three decades of work on such memorable films as “Dangerous Liaisons”, “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” “Point Break”, “Speed”, “The Matrix” series, “John Wick” and the upcoming sequel “John Wick: Chapter 2”.
Rising Star of the Year – Jack Huston, who stars in MGM’s upcoming remake of “Ben Hur” to be released this summer.
The Award of Excellence in Acting – Bryce Dallas Howard who starred in “The Village”, “The Help”, “50/50”, last year’s “Jurassic World” and will be featured in Walt Disney Studio’s upcoming “Pete’s Dragon”.
Breakthrough Performer of the Year Award – Dave Franco, who launched his career in “21 Jump Street” starred in “Neighbors”, and “Now You See Me” with follow-ups “Neighbors 2: Sorority House, “Now You See Me 2” and can be seen in this year’s “Nerve”.
Ensemble of the Universe Award -The cast of “Independence Day: Resurgence” which included: Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Maika Monroe, Jesse Usher, Sela Ward, Vivica A. Fox, and Brent Spiner.
Male Star of the Year – Jesse Eisenberg who stars as Lex Luther in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and reprises his role in “Now You See Me 2”.
Female Stars of the Year – The cast of STX Entertainment’s anticipated “Bad Moms”: Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Christina Applegate, Kathryn Hahn, and Annie Mumolo.
