Most of us have jobs and families — the typical realities of life which make up most of our days, but when is the last time you did something just for you, maybe something a little different and unconventional? If you are looking for a fresh hobby exposing you to new adventures, try roller derby. Many of us spent time at our local roller rink skating to upbeat music, and drinking copious amounts of sugary soda from the refreshment stand, so why not take that to the next level.
Referees and Non-skating officials play the most crucial role in roller derby, because without them the games could not be played. The Cincinnati Rollergirls have five home games scheduled this spring at the historic Cincinnati Gardens, and with travel games practically year round for Cincinnati and other local teams, there is always a need for officials to staff games. There is no better officiating troupe in the sport than the “Officials Union Local 513,” and the Heads of Officiating for the Cincinnati Rollergirls are some of the most talented and well respected in the country, so those who attend have the opportunity to learn from some of the best.
The Cincinnati Battering Rams, the city’s men’s roller derby team will also be a part of the event recruiting for new members. While not affiliated with the Cincinnati Rollergirls, the Battering Rams share resources such as officials and coaching staff. The Cincinnati Battering Rams are currently ranked 17th in the Men’s Roller Derby Association.
The day begins at 10 a.m. with a meet and greet with members of the Officials Union Local 513, the Cincinnati Rollergirls and The Cincinnati Battering Rams. This will be followed at 11 a.m. by a co-ed scrimmage which recruits will be invited to watch and help officiate. Scheduled for 12:15 p.m. is a meeting with the Officials Union Local 513 where you will have the opportunity to learn and ask questions.
