The annual celebration of the Feast of the Assumption with a Procession and High Mass at the Church of the Advent of Christ the King will take place this coming Monday. The celebrant will be Father Rod Thompson and the preacher will be Father Paul Allick. As usual music will be provided by the resident choir Schola Adventus led by Director of Music Paul Ellison.
This year Ellison has chosen to focus on several of the early Spanish composers. Thus the Setting of the Ordinary will be the so-called Missa Caça by Cristóbal de Morales, considered by many to be the most influential Spanish composer prior to Tomás Luis de Victoria. Victoria himself will be represented by the singing of the anthem “Ne timeas, Maria” (fear not, Mary). The introit antiphon will be Francisco Guerrero’s “Rorate caeli” (rain down ye heavens). In addition, Ellison has selected as the organ postlude Antonio de Cabezón’s verset for the Magnificat in the fourth tone.
The other major composer that Ellison has selected for this service is Igor Stravinsky. Schola Adventus will sing his “Ave Maria” setting. The motet for the service will be “I beheld her” by Anglo-Canadian organist Healey Willan. Finally, for the organ prelude Ellison will perform music written by Marcel Dupré for the Annunciation celebration.
This service will take place this coming Monday, April 4. It will begin at 6:30 p.m. The church is located at 261 Fell Street, between Franklin Street and Gough Street. The church may be contacted at 415-431-0454 if there are any further questions.
