On December 19, 2015, I had the wonderful opportunity to participate in Christmas in the Park 2015. While this event was not held in Houston, it was in Texas. Dallas to be exact.
Upon entering the venue I was overwhelmed to the point that tears began to roll down my cheeks. The true spirit of Christmas and Christianity permeated the atmosphere as thousands of people lined the corridors waiting to receive from those generous enough to give not only of their resources but of their time and their talent.
I personally spent a large amount of my time at the gospel stage. However, there were volunteers all over the building. From free food, to free books, to free toys and clothes no stone was left unturned. The Mattress Firm Sleep Experts even donated free mattresses for children. Over 50,000 people registered for the event.
The gospel stage was blessed by several nationally known artists who gave of their time to share in the festivities. Sunday Best Finalist Maurice Griffin, Atlanta recording artist Wanda Trent Phillips, and the anointed Christi Tillman were among those present. Other artists present included Dana Hemphil, Jamel Strong, Elisabeth Davis, Anthony Faulkner, Anita Jarell Robinson, Brittany Johnson, Norris E. J. Jackson, Charlene Robertson, Stephen Anderson, The Waco Community Choir, Certrell Russell, and many many more.
Christmas in the Park is organized by the S.M. Wright Foundation. The S.M. Wright Foundation was established by the Wright family in 1998 to provide support and stability to underprivileged children and less fortunate families through hunger relief, economic empowerment, and assistance in the areas of education, health and social services. The foundation is unique among social services because it carries out its mission on a daily basis in the community, providing hope, encouragement and assistance to families in need. With inflation and the income inequality gap both increasing, many less fortunate families continue to need assistance to make ends meet.
The foundation offers several annual community events as well as ongoing service programs through its community program centers. Community events include the Annual Back-to-School Event, which serves more than 2,500 individuals each year; the Thanksgiving Day Feast, with over 3,000 attendees annually; and the Christmas in the Park Celebration, which attracts more than 40,000 attendees every winter.
