Crate & Barrel and Pottery Barn have lovely Christmas decorations but they’re very expensive. But they’re inexpensive and simple to make yourself. Here are ideas for attractive homemade holiday decor like those at Crate & Barrel and Pottery Barn. Tips are included for Hanukkah decor too. Best of all, these Hanukkah and Christmas decorations are cheap to make–sometimes even free–with natural, recycled materials.
Crate & Barrel holiday table runner centerpiece. Instead of the traditional round centerpiece, holiday decor is trending toward table runners with holiday decor displayed in a line along the table. On very large dining room tables, table runners are placed diagonally with corner decorations. Buy festive table runners for $1 at Dollar Tree. For holiday decor, choose table runners in brocade, tapestry, linen, satin, velvet or lace fabrics. Choose bold colors: gold, silver, crimson, pink, teal, purple, burgundy, blue, emerald, black. Hanukkah colors are blue and silver. You might repurpose a swatch of fabric from a tablecloth, curtains or decorative pillow shams. Cut fabric the length of your dining room table with a few inches overhanging. Hem raw edges or fold over and secure with heavy tape.
Gather dry leaves, twigs, pine cones, pine boughs, acorns and other pretty seed pods. Arrange foliage on newspaper. Spray with gold, silver or metallic colored spray paint. Pearl colored paint is pretty too. Allow to dry. Rotate and spray the other side. Don’t fully coat pine boughs–just spangle with silver, or use spray-on fake snow. Arrange painted foliage along table runner. Weave in Hanukkah or Christmas decorations and bead garlands. Add pieces of lace, fabric ribbons or bow. Place three pillar candles of alternating heights on a holiday platter in the center of the table. Scatter beads, gems, decorative rocks or marbles around base. Dress up candles by tying velvet ribbon, lace or raffia around them. Use hot glue or Glue Dots to decorate candles with sequins, appliques, buttons and beads. Pottery Barn holiday decor. Select an attractive crystal punch bowl, pottery dish, serving platter from your China cabinet. Fill with glass holiday ornaments in unique shapes and designs. fill with natural or spray-painted leaves, acorns, nut shells, twigs, evergreen boughs and pine cones. Add a few Christmas decorations, ornaments or bead garlands. Make fragrant Pottery Barn style holiday decor by filling pretty bowls with potpourri, dried berries, apple, orange and lemon peels, cinnamon bark and cloves.
Create signature Pottery Barn birch bark candles for Christmas decorations. Wrap a hot, moist cloth around a ivory colored pillar candle. This will slightly melt the wax and give it that birch bark texture. Using a brown or black Sharpie marker, draw horizontal bark patterns and knot holes. Use brown shoe polish to highlight and shadow. Birch bark candles retail for $15-$69 at Pottery Barn, but you can make similar birch bark candles for cents on the dollar.
