Family-friendly Chinese New Year celebrations to welcome the Year of the Monkey are taking place at the Citadel Outlets in the City of Commerce during February. The outlet mall is a prime destination spot for Chinese travelers.
“Lunar New Year is a wonderful time of cultural celebration,” said Traci Markel, Citadel Outlets Marketing Director. “We’re looking forward to sharing these special traditional performances, vibrant décor and Red Envelope promotion with our Citadel Outlets family of guests and visitors from all over the world.”
About 570,000 tourists from China visited Los Angeles County in 2013, a quadrupling of the 158,000 who visited in 2009, according to the Los Angeles Economic Development Council. As many as 60 percent of shoppers at the Citadel will have primary residences that are outside the United States. That estimate comes from Steve Craig, President / CEO of Craig Realty Group, the owner operator of the shopping center and whose story was written up in a recent ebook.
Sponsored by Air China, there are several events designed to pay homage to the rich history and culture surrounding the Feb. 8 holiday. Throughout the month, shoppers will have the chance to enjoy festive red and gold lanterns, twinkling lights and an authentic 17-ft Chinese pagoda decorating center court. On Saturday, Feb. 6 from 12p.m. – 3p.m., more than 40 live dancers and artists from the Los Angeles Chinese Cultural Center will perform Chinese dragon dances, folk dances and traditional songs and drum ceremonies.
Running Feb. 1-8, Citadel Outlets will be honoring the ancient Chinese “Red Envelope” gifting tradition by giving away red envelopes filled with gift cards and center promotions at the Customer Service Center. Interested shoppers can join in the fun by saying the phrase “Xin nian kuai le” or “Gong xi fa cai” which means “Happy New Year” to receive a complimentary red envelope. The tradition, symbolizing good luck and well wishes for the New Year, is a gift from Citadel Outlets to express appreciation for the center’s wonderful shoppers and guests from all over the world.
From Jan. 18 – Feb. 14, all center visitors who travel to or from Los Angeles on Air China will have the opportunity to present either their Air China boarding pass, flight itinerary or Phoenix Miles card and receive a complimentary tote bag. The bag has will include store gifts, as well as complimentary access to the center’s VIP Luxury Lounge featuring comfortable seating, cable television, WiFi access, snacks, beverages and concierge services.
The Citadel has 130 stores and is one of 13 active outlet shopping malls across the U.S. owned by Craig Realty Group. The company has five more shopping malls in development.
