On the Netflix series “Chelsea Does,” comedian Chelsea Handler does four episodes about different topics she wants to skewer. Episode 1 is entitled, “Chelsea Does Marriage.” For this episode, Handler chose to interview a wide range of people about their views on marriage. She interviewed very young children, older children, and adults of various ages. Possibly her most horrendous took place at Ashley Madison headquarters in Toronto. Ashley Madison is a website that guarantees affairs for paying customers looking to cheat on their spouses.
Basically, cheating is a deal breaker for Handler. Where cheating is involved, she does not see shades of gray. As she put it, cheating is a “black and white issue” for her. So, if she were ever to get married, the use of a site like Ashley Madison would be a cardinal sin in her theoretical marriage.
Interestingly, when Handler went to Toronto to meet with Noel Biderman (who has since resigned as CEO of Ashley Madison), he told Handler that the site was designed to be marketed towards women. In fact, when he showed Handler his Bill Clinton boardroom, there was a poster of Bill Clinton and another of Hillary Clinton. Bill Clinton had a finger to his lips, much like the woman in the Ashley Madison logo. The Hillary Clinton poster showed her in the same pose, but there was a slogan next to her image. The slogan read: “New Adventures. Start with…” Below that was the address AshleyMadison.com. Apparently, Biderman assumed Hillary Clinton would endorse a site like Ashley Madison. Handler responded as follows:
I don’t know her very well, or at all, but I can speak for her when I say that that won’t be considered a tribute.
Biderman tried to convince Handler of women’s interest in Ashley Madison by talking about research claiming women love being pursued. He insisted that women who cheat on their husbands loved the “passion” they experienced when they were first being pursued, and they want to experience that once again. Cheating for women isn’t just about sex. Handler pointed out, “It’s hard to be pursued while you’re also married.”
The interview didn’t get any better from there. She had a sickening interview with Biderman and his wife Amanda. Biderman said that he had not cheated on Amanda…yet. There’s no need to discuss how disgusted Handler was with him after that. She advised Amanda that it would be a good time to get out of the marriage if that’s what she wanted.
At the end of the episode, there was an update stating that Biderman had resigned since his interview with Handler. The infamous Ashley Madison leak happened after the Handler interview, which led to lawsuits from customers of the site. It was also revealed that Biderman had been sending e-mails indicating that he had most likely been cheating on his wife after all.
