How lucky am I that I have the best assistant in the world! Through his guidance and knowing what a foodie I am, he urged me to try out this small treasure of a restaurant, buried on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, right on the outskirts of Chinatown at 35 Orchard Street.
Cheeky Sandwiches immediately caught my eye. Their theme is all Louisiana Bayou, their chefs are serious and kick-ass, plus you can watch them cooking your food which is always a perk for me. The kitchen is nestled behind a counter where the customers can eat. I love to sit perched right at the corner counter and watch the chef dredge my oysters in preparation for frying and watch my sensational oyster po boy sandwich come together. Thus far, I’ve tried food from five different chefs and they are all outstanding!
Cheeky Sandwiches is a small place that fills up rather quickly, especially in the evenings. The quality of food is simply phenomenal! Everything is fresh and they receive their shipments of seafood directly from New Orleans, several times a week. I am an oyster fiend and their quality of oysters is beyond words. They melt in your mouth and are so light and airy. I just finished eating and I’m still thinking about it.
Their chicken is perfectly juicy on the inside and delightfully crispy on the outside. I’ve yet to try everything on the menu, but at some point, I will. Right now, I’m in an all-I-can-eat oyster phase, so whenever I do get the opportunity to get here, I get that oyster po boy. They also come in shrimp, or a half and half oyster/shrimp combo, beef short ribs, pork and chicken. They also have two veggie options- Grass is made up of roasted beets, honey butternut squash, fried goat cheese and arugula. Their Veggie is veggie muffalata, pickled mix of veggies and swiss on an olive roll. Try the gingerale with your po boy, which is an all-natural gingerale with flavor options and compliments the sandwich very weel, or a beer. If you have room- finish it off with an order of their benyays.
They also have a pretty dope breakfast menu, but I haven’t had the chance to sample off of it yet. I suggest that if you love good food- period- you hit up Cheeky Sandwiches and try them out for size. The food is so good, that even though they have been having technical glitches and have had their cash only sign out, people are going to the ATM and coming right back. I almost feel bad for having to share how good they are with the world, out of fear that I will get here one day and find out to my dismay that they are out of oysters! Hopefully, this review will solidify that they always keep some to the side, just for me. :-) Because that picture of the man crying as he bites into his sandwich is exactly how I feel every time I eat here. I cry and then fall in love all over again.
**Disclaimer- the picture of the po boy is from today, when they ran out of the proper bread and instead had to swap out with challah bread- which by the way- was just as delicious and even more filling. I always forget to take a picture otherwise, as I scoff my food down so fast before I think of it. Shameful, yes, I know. What can I say?
***Disclaimer #2- The bathroom is like an outhouse ladies. Be prepared. After all, it’s the Bayou!
