Certain types of behavior on the part of your spouse around tax time can alert you that you have a cheating mate. The following income tax-related behavior by your husband or wife should be cause for concern. You need to look deeper into the situation of your spouse does any of the things below:
Your spouse suddenly wants to file a separate tax return when you’ve always filed joint returns in the past. Why the sudden change? Is there a valid reason for this request? Is your spouse acting on the advice of an accountant or financial advisor? The only way to find out is to ask. If the answers are not forthcoming, or the reason you’re given doesn’t make sense, consider it a warning sign. There may be something your spouse is trying to hide.
Your spouse asks you to sign your joint tax return without first looking it over. Don’t let your spouse pressure you into signing the forms without reviewing the information they contain. Take your time and go over the tax form and all associated documents, including the attached schedules (Schedule A, B, C, etc.) If your spouse has a problem with this, it’s a sign that something is wrong. Find out what it is.
Your spouse refuses to explain questionable items on the tax return. Ask your spouse about anything on your joint income tax form that you don’t understand. If the explanation doesn’t make sense (or even if it does) ask to see supporting documents – receipts, W-2 Forms, bank statements, 1099 Forms, etc. If your spouse becomes angry, defensive, evasive, or resorts to double talk, you have reason to be concerned. Your spouse neglects (or refuses) to show you a copy of the completed income tax return.
Emma always gave her husband her W-2 form at the beginning of the year to take to their accountant when tax time rolled around. Lance would give Emma the completed forms, and she would sign them without bothering to check the information they contained. Her only question was “ Do we get a refund this year, or do we have to pay?” If they owed money, Lance would tell her “We owe X amount, but don’t worry about it, I’ll write out a check.”
This is typical of many women who allow their husband to handle all the arrangements associated with filing their joint income tax return. Don’t let this happen to you. It could come back to haunt you one day. Even if you don’t suspect your husband of any wrongdoing, it’s still a good idea to check everything out.
Your spouse signs (forges) your name on the joint tax return and tells you about it after the fact, saying something like “Oh, I took care of it; I signed your name and mailed it off.” First of all, it’s illegal. Second, you need to see what information these forms contain. If your spouse refuses to show you the tax forms, what is he or she trying to hide?
Your spouse doesn’t tell you when the refund check arrives. Obviously, your spouse has plans for the money that don’t involve you. The money is earmarked for something he or she doesn’t want you to know about.
Your spouse cashes and spends the refund check without your knowledge or consent.
One wife found out that her husband spent their income tax refund wining and dining his mistress.
One husband discovered that his wife spent their income tax refund on having her lover’s car repaired, when a mechanic called their home to say that the parts and labor were going to exceed the amount of money he had been given.
Don’t let this happen to you. Stay on top of the situation. If your spouse is involved in financial or marital infidelity, you can’t afford to be the last to know.
