The Inns of the Gettysburg Area are presenting a special Celebrate Lincoln event today, Feb 20. As an annual celebration held every February in conjunction with Lincoln’s birthday, Celebrate Lincoln tells the story of the President’s dedication of the National Cemetery along with the background behind what was to become known as the famous Gettysburg Address.
The event will start at 11 a.m. in the Dobbin House’s Abigail Adams Ballroom with a PowerPoint talk led by Licensed Town Historian John McTague. McTague has spoken at numerous seminars, roundtable events, and conferences in the past. He also happens to be an authority on Abraham Lincoln and his time spent in Gettysburg.
Lunch at the Dobbin House will follow the presentation at 11:30 a.m. The menu will offer entrée choices of baked chicken with mushrooms, broiled flounder, or PA Dutch ham, green beans and potatoes. Vegetarian options are also available upon request. For more information or special considerations, call 717-337-9508. You may also visit the Dobbin House website to view menus by clicking here.
Lincoln character impersonator James Hayney will be joining guests for the meal, making his rounds to each table in friendly, personable conversation. At the meal’s conclusion he will deliver a short speech.
The celebration of Abraham Lincoln will continue into the evening with another event at Battlefield Bed and Breakfast from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. This BYOB cocktail event, the Lincoln Conspirator’s Trial, will feature Mark Grim in a portrayal as Major General John Hartranft in first person, describing the imprisonment, trial, and execution of the accused conspirators in the Lincoln assassination, in which eight were imprisoned and four were executed. Gen. Hartranft, serving as the Special Provost Marshall of the Old Military Prison in Washington, D.C., had the responsibility of overseeing the accused and condemned prisoners.
Snacks and refreshments will be served during the event in addition to cold beverages. The cost for attending requires a $13 donation per person. Reservations may be made by contacting any member innkeeper with the Inns of the Gettysburg Area. For a full listing, click here.
Tickets for the Dobbin House PowerPoint and lunch cost $40 for adults and $30 for children under 12. Either event can be attended separately or for a combined package experience of $53. There are also special weekend packages available for this event through participating inns.
