On Saturday, February 27, 2016, the 20th anniversary of the first Pokémon video games launched in Japan will be celebrated as Pokemon Day. Various events live and online will occur such as in New York City at the Nintendo NY located at Rockefeller Center there will be fun activities for all. On the other coast at the Pokémon pop-up shop at JapanLA in Los Angeles, Saturday night has a special opening-night celebration. That pop-up shop will continue to stay open every day until March 27. At participating stores you can find special events such as special foil cards featuring Pikachu and Magikarp, special activity book and a poster of the original 151 Pokémon while they last at Toys“R”Us and at GameStop a Mythical Pokémon poster with purchase of any Pokémon product while they last. If you received an invite, you could be with actress, director, producer, Drew Barrymore while she hosts a Pokémon Afternoon Soiree at the exclusive Sunset Tower penthouse on Saturday. The intimate event will celebrate the brand’s US categorical expansion into unisex fashion, accessories and home decor. Guests will enjoy complimentary Pokémon inspired nail art and enjoy the company of special guest, Pikachu.
For online celebration go to Twitch ( an Amazon owned site) where starting at 10 am PST on Saturday, their Pokemon event will include Pokémon discussion, gameplay, interviews, and other entertainment. Starting at 6 pm PST, there will be an animation marathon with movies, favorite episodes, and animation specials until 6 pm PST.
Then there are some newer apps available. With a mid January update, there is the Pokemon Shuffle, a puzzle game where you line up three or more Pokémon vertically or horizontally to battle against wild Pokémon. A very recent also free app and for iPhone and not quite yet for Android is the Pokémon Photo Booth. This app can customize your portraits (selfies, friends, pets who think they are Pokemon) and add captions in the style of classic Pokémon games. No word yet on release date for Pokemon Go.
Then there are the video games. Pokemon Day marks the launch of Pokémon Blue, Pokémon Red, and Pokémon Yellow for systems in the Nintendo 3DS family. This is the original Pokémon games almost exactly as they first appeared. Each color version has different Pokemon you can capture. Pokémon Red has Ekans, Arbok, Oddish, Gloom, Vileplume, Mankey, Primeape, Growlithe, Arcanine, Scyther, Electabuzz. Pokémon Blue has Sandshrew, Sandslash, Vulpix, Ninetails, Meowth, Persian, Bellsprout, Weepinbell, Victreebel, Magmar, Pinsir. Pokemon Yellow is a little different as you start with Pikachu and then can get Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur. They will be available on Nintendo eShop with Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue in a special New Nintendo 3DS Pokémon 20th Anniversary bundle. Just announced is that Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon will be released on the Nintendo 3DS this holiday 2016. Also you should be able to bring in Pokémon from the original games mentioned above for use in these new games.
