It doesn’t get any better than the “Bubbly Italian Brunch” at Theo Mio Italian Kitchen in the InterContinental Bangkok. The latest venture for celebrity Chef Theo Randall from the UK, this casual yet comfortable weekend brunch includes a tempting ala carte menu along with free flow appetizers, antipasto, Prosecco, hand selected red and white wines from Italy, and signature cocktails. Inhabiting the prime location on the ground floor of the hotel, Theo Mio is a relaxed and elegantly casual venue dominated by a classic white and cobalt blue color scheme. Whether dining inside or out on the terrace, you will be sitting beneath massive trees with strings of soft white light bulbs that evoke a delightful “dining in the garden” aesthetic. There is an open bar and see-through kitchen with menu items written by hand on a chalk board for that unpretentious homey feel.
The concept of this weekend brunch is a direct result of the trend in “ala carte” brunching and this will appeal to anyone who does not what to be overwhelmed with a massive buffet, but still wants the benefit of all you can eat food and drink options as well as dishes cooked fresh to order. The menu reflects a concerted effort to incorporate fresh and seasonal local ingredients as well as personally sourced imported items. The cuisine is vibrant and light and the free flow antipasto dishes are designed to be shared. For the main course you have a choice between several entrées or pizza based on your preferences, and the dessert with coffee or tea.
I recommend getting the meal started off with a glass of the Prosecco Bottega Millesimato, 2014 and the Bruschetta w/ Tomatoes, Roasted Garlic, Basil and Olive Oil and the Slow Cooked Roasted Peppers Stuffed w/ Tomatoes, Garlic, Basil & Salted Anchovy. The roasted tomatoes and sweet peppers are caramelized and both dishes are vibrant and fresh while bursting with flavor. Super simple, but highly successful, there is nowhere to hide as the caliber of the ingredients allows each dish to shine. Another classic Italian favorite is the thinly sliced Prosciutto, Pancetta Arrotolata, and Salami w/ Home-made Crackers & Balsamic Shallots. The salty and fatty cured meats are always a winning combination and are elevated when served with a drinkable glass of red wine such as the La Carraia Genesi Rosso, Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Sangiovese, Italy 2012. The Traditional w/ Caesar Salad Crispy Cos Lettuce & Anchovy Dressing is one of the better Caesar salads I have tried and the addition of the crispy pancetta chip takes it to another level. I also highly recommend the Grilled Octopus w/ Borlotti Beans, Celery, Rocket, Radicchio, and Slow Roasted Cherry Tomatoes & Pomegranate. The octopus was firm yet tender and the beans added a rustic heartiness to it with a subtle sweet, tart bite from the pomegranate. It was a truly inspired creation. While all the previous dishes can be ordered as much as you like, there is only one serving of your main course. I opted for the Porchetta of Roasted Pork Belly Rolled w/ Herbs & Fennel, while my partner tried the Lasagne al Forno w/ Slow Cooked Beef Ragu, Béchamel & Parmesan. The lasagna is by far one of the meatiest versions I have had in Thailand and it was thoroughly comforting and satisfying; however, the porchetta was the undisputed “belle of the ball”. Unbelievably tender and herbaceous, the succulent and aromatic meat immediately sent me to porky paradise. The gravy served with the meat was stunning and the crispy skin was exceptional and I especially enjoyed it with a crisp glass of La Carraia Genesi Bianco, Vermentino Chardonnay Sauvignon Blanc, Italy 2013. This pork dish is a beautifully composed offering that is sure to leave you a little bit weak in the knees and will undoubtedly have you coming back to enjoy it time and time again.
Don’t skip dessert as the Almond Tart w/ Poached Guava & Madagascan Fresh Vanilla Crème Fraiche is simply divine. Rich and decadent, this is the stuff that cravings are made of. They also have a proper European Lemon Tart w/ Crème Fraiche and chocolate lovers will get a heavenly treat with the decadent flourless Torta di Chocolate w/ Cream di Mascarpone.
