Should Castle continue for Season 9, sources are confirming that the series will be less one Kate. Stana Katic has not been asked back to the show to reprise her role as Kate Beckett.
TVLine reports that Katic’s one-year extension expired and she was not asked to return for the fall season opener. Tamala Jones, the medical examiner in the show will also be absent for the new season. Jones played the often-seen Lanie Parish.
ABC is confirming the loss of the two actresses and has issued a statement over the new lineup:
“Kate Beckett has been a beloved character on our hit series Castle for the past eight years. “We are grateful for Stana Katic’s talent and dedication to the series and we hope to continue our relationship. Tamala Jones has also been an integral part of the series and we are grateful she was a part of Castle.”
Exiting with grace as one would expect from Katic, she released this statement:
“Rather than distract from what was an amazing experience, I would just like to say that I’m very grateful to ABC for giving me the opportunity to be a part of a much beloved show. Thank you to the fans.”
The cast shake-up is designed to help the show cut costs for the future of Castle. While this is an obvious plan to achieve that goal, losing Kate on the show will surely plummet ratings. One of the main attractions is the relationship between Kate and Castle. When writers began to take the show in a split-up of the duo, the show began to drop in ratings.
True fans of the show began to balk at where the writers were taking them, but soon the couple finally began to work together again. Kate recently moved back in with Castle and the beloved duo had returned to normalcy. Grab some popcorn and let’s get back to solving crimes! The new blow to Castle will put on the brakes for fans it seems with the loss of Katic. All of the comments around the web prove that the largest majority of viewers will not be watching if they kill off the character of Kate Beckett.
It’s quite obvious how they will take Katic’s character out of the mix. Beckett and Castle were together again in the last couple of episodes and all was right with the world according to Castle. The two finally came to the conclusion that working together was the best way to defeat LokSat, the powerful drug lord. But it seems this choice to work as a team is going to be Kate’s demise at the end of Season 8. The finale will be airing May 16 and according to producer Alexi Hawley, both Katic and Fillion’s contracts are up, leaving the possible dramatic close to what was once a great series.
Hawley states that the end of Season 8 will be a dynamic way to leave open the possibility that the show will not return in the same form.
In the season finale, “Crossfire,” a final pursuit of LokSat will place Beckett and Rick Castle in a deadly situation which will be the perfect way to kill off Katic’s character. Of course viewers don’t have to be psychics to know that Castle will then be angry over his wife’s death. This opens up a new chapter in Season 9 with everyone at the precinct having an ax to grind over the loss of Beckett. Fans will have to decide if the show will be worth watching after Katic’s beloved character’s life comes to a violent end, but since the majority are already making their voices heard that the series won’t be worth watching, it seems Castle will see a demise as well.
ABC is wanting to save money on the show. Apparently they have found that opportunity by ending the series completely. The lack of viewers will also be the demise of what was once a good series. May it rest in peace.
