There is a lot of talk about who is going to replace Daniel Craig as the next James Bond in the ongoing franchise about the fictional British spy from the mind of Ian Fleming. Idris Elba, who first came to fame with American audiences as Stringer Bell in the HBO series, ‘The Wire’ and is famous as the off-book cop on the British TV show ‘Luther’, as well as many great roles in Hollywood blockbusters and arthouse films, is one speculation. Bond is known for having perfect sartorial style, always wearing the on point wardrobe for whatever caper he is involved in. Elba has perfect style in real life, so he would make a great Bond. But if the producers decide to really switch things up, an actress like Angelina Jolie or Jennifer Lawrence would be perfect as the MI6 secret agent, and her watch of choice ought to be from the G-SHOCK S-Series.
A big watch is de rigueur for a woman who is looking to make a powerful style statement, and many brands offer elegant and sexy timepieces for the professional and chic wardrobe. G-SHOCK is made by the timepiece stalwart Casio, and their line of sporty watches has become a cult brand favored by athletic stars in fields as varied as snowboarding, skateboarding, surfing and every kind of extreme sport imaginable. The G-SHOCK line was first introduced in 1983 for men and fast became popular with firefighters, police, astronauts, mountaineers, paramedics, film directors (Ron Howard and Francis Coppola are fans) and soldiers. According to Mark Bowden’s book, ‘Blackhawk Down’, the DELTA forces wore G-SHOCK watches during the combat events of 3 & 4 October 1993. The watch was designed to survive a 10m fall onto a hard surface, as well as water resistant up to 10 bar. It is a fierce timepiece with serious cred. The Baby G came out in 1991 for women, and has since become as coveted and collectible as the lines of G-SHOCK watches for men.
In 2014 Casio America, Inc., unveiled its greatest timepiece collection launch yet with a focus on the female consumer: the G-Shock S-Series. The S-Series is the first of its kind that reduces the case size and strap for a sporty, fashion-forward aesthetic. With the launch of S-Series, Casio hones in on the concept of innovation meets design. The S-Series utilizes advanced technology produced with the utmost precision in premium fabrications to deliver a stylish watch that is targeted to the sporty, modern and active female consumer. The S-Series elevates the G-Shock brand into the contemporary fashion space for the female consumer who loved G-Shock watches but found they were too large for her wrist.
What’s particularly cool about the G-SHOCK S-Series is the fact that it is the grown up version of the Baby G; now for the ladies there is more of the kind of heft and sexiness that the guys have been enjoying. The S-Series can easily hold its own with any of the lines of the men’s G-SHOCK watches, and brings the kind of tough and edgy appeal that can go from the slopes or the gym straight to a night out. The G-SHOCK S-Series offers a pretty wide range of colors and patterns, and with the newest line featuring the soft texture of the ‘Heathered’ limited edition, the macho quality is subdued into an almost velvety sleekness. The S-Series offers women the form and function of a well designed watch, while also creating a fashion statement that is unique because of its insider appeal.
G-SHOCK has long been a favorite of watch collectors, with some fans owning as many as 300 watches from the different lines that have been released through the years, as well as collaborations with fashion brands like Stussy and Levis, and special edition series that pay homage to environmental causes. There is only one brick and mortar establishment in the United States that is devoted exclusively to showcasing the G-SHOCK watches, and that is here in New York City on West Broadway in Soho. The entire line of the G-SHOCK S-SERIES is available at the store, as well as the men’s watches. The second floor of the store is devoted to a gallery of artwork that has been commissioned to celebrate the watches, as well as a showcase of the greatest hits from previous lines. The day before Christmas Eve, the shop was full of customers buying gifts, including one guy who wanted to get his young daughter her own Baby G so she would stop swiping her mother’s new G-SHOCK S-Series.
The S Series collections are available at Nordstroms, Macy’s and select department stores, as well as G-SHOCK Soho NYC store, and online at www.gshock.com/s_series.
