Located near the San Jose International Airport, Cariari Golf Club is a private club just past the Doubletree Resort. Caddies are mandatory, and our caddie was knowegble and spoke excellent english.
The course was soggy coming off of the long and extended rainy season, December when we played, is early in their “summer” or dry season. The tees, greens and fairways are bermuda grass, and are in excellent shape. The bunkers are a course sand but very playable, the ball comes out fast but with plenty of spin.
Rating TTTT 1/2 Green Speed Fast, especially for bermuda grass
The course is very tight, but not overly long, about 6700 from the tips, and is at 3000 ft elevation with plenty of hills, but that was not noticeable due to the wet conditions. Jungle lurks on many holes, and the tree lined fairways demand a straight tee shot, dont stray here, you will pay, which I did on several holes. Water is not a big factor, the par 3 4th plays over a pond, and there are rocky creeks running along 10 and across 9 and 18. The bunkers are deep, and well situated. This is a good tough test, our caddie Max, mentioned that a recent pro tournament held there the winning score was 5 over par.
Rating TTTT Tough, a fair test for all golfers, no tricks
This is a full service country club, golf, tennis and an olympic pool, the range is small but adquate and nice size practice green is next to the bar and grill. The club is very security conscience with guards and a receptionist at the entrance to the clubhouse and an armed guard at the farthest location on the course. The staff was helpful, once a few language and other challenges were addressed.
This is a great club, the junior program is excellent with an emphasis toward tournaments, if you are in country, plan on contacting them, guests may be rare but I think if you can get an invite take advantage of it.
One note, rental car agencies, Alamo, in particular are very cagy, ie liars, boardering on fraud, they will tell you that a rate includes all mandatory insurances, and then hit you with more mandatory insurance, part of this is the government who controls the insurance industry, and part is having you hostage to the extra fees.
