This past Friday was the final home game of the regular season as well as Fan Appreciation Night at the Canton Memorial Civic Center. The Canton Charge (30-17), presented by SecureData 365 and powered by the Cleveland Cavaliers, defeated the Grand Rapids Drive (21-26), 114-100 in front of a standing room only crowd of 3,913.
It was an exciting game with fast breaks, court length passes and spectacular dunks but also one fraught with errors as both teams had trouble getting a handle on the ball. Canton began the game slow, missing three shots in the paint before getting their rhythm. It took a Quinn Cook three-point bomb with 1:48 left in the first quarter that put the Charge ahead for the rest of the game.
The three pointer was the shot that continually shut down the Drive as every time they came close to regaining the lead Canton would hit from the arc and once more pull ahead. Canton at times took a lead by as many as 16 points as they took the season series 4-2 against their Central Division rivals. The win finished their home season at 18-7 having posted 13-2 since the beginning of the year.
It was C.J. Wilcox (Los Angeles Clippers assignment) who led the Charge with 19 points on 7-of-15 in 25 minutes as Quinn Cook came off the bench for 30 minutes with 18 points, six boards and eight assists. John Holland was good for an additional 18 points with 7-of-9 shooting in 25 minutes of play. Chris Crawford put 11 points, four assists, two blocks and four rebounds on the books in 22 minutes of action. In fact, each of the eleven players who saw action on the court scored points for the win.
On the Grand Rapids side, Devin Ebanks sunk a game high 26 points with nine boards and two blocks in 45 minutes. Dahntay Jones made good with 18 points and four rebounds in 30 minutes of court time. Kelsey Barlow added to the score with twelve points, eight rebounds and three steals in 44 minutes.
The Canton Charge is now on the road for the final three games of the season. Last night the team tied a franchise record for wins with a 122-111victory over the Erie BayHawks. Canton faces the Westchester Knicks at Westchester County Center on Monday, March 28 with the final game of the season on April 1 against the Raptors 905 at the Hershey Center before returning home for their first playoff game.
