It was another of those edge of your seat games where the Canton Charge bench waited until the waning minutes of the fourth quarter to take and hold a commanding lead against the Westchester Knicks.
Garnering their eight straight home win and 21st win out of 24 outings the Canton Charge (26-14), presented by SecureData 365 and powered by the Cleveland Cavaliers, defeated the Westchester Knicks (23-18), 105-95 at Canton Memorial Civic Center.
It was Canton’s bench that once again came to the rescue outscoring Westchester’s reserves 63 to 19. Nick Minnerath posted his ninth double-double of the year with 17 points and 15 rebounds in 33 minutes of court time. Player of the game Michael Stockton earned his third double-double of the season getting 15 points with 10 assists in 32 minutes of play. It was C.J. Wilcox who led Canton with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting and 4-of-9 past the three point line in 31 minutes on the court. Wilcox is on assignment from the Los Angeles Clippers. Canton’s John Holland scored 17 points and grabbed five boards with three steals in 27 minutes. Juvonte Reddic added 13 points and nine boards in 33 minutes.
It seemed that both teams had difficulty getting their shots to find the bottom of the basket as a very physical game was had under the backboard. Down 23-19, Canton fought back in the first quarter as Minnerath and Wilcox combined for 24 points. The second quarter saw the bench rise to the occasion with 32 points as the Charge went into the locker room with a slim 49-48 lead.
The third quarter saw seven lead changes and two ties as neither team could get their shots to fall. With the score 75-74 in favor of Canton with 2:43 left the score remained the same as the quarter timed out. It took a Minnerath technical to give the Charge a 75-74 advantage going into the fourth.
A gasp ran through the crowd as the Knicks went on a 10-3 run in the first 4:26 as they took the lead 84-79. With just 1:41 left to play and Westchester ahead 93-91, John Holland hit for three putting Canton ahead to the end as the Charge forced four Knick misses on their final five shots while hitting four of their last five at the money end of the court.
Jimmer Fredette was Westchester’s high scorer with 26 points on 9-of-20 with five boards, seven assists and two steals in 39 minutes.
