January is a popular month for undertaking remodels and renovations, which require sizeable budgets, making large-scale projects difficult to tackle for some. A budget need not stand in the way of an inspired home, consider making small changes to refresh a space.
The most common way of refreshing a home is to repaint or hang wallpaper. Paint is inexpensive and comes in a vast array of colors. Its versatile nature allows for creativity, from stenciling to painting stripes and using contrasting colors to create focal points. There are products on the market that create textured patterns, from faux marble to suede and leather looks. Modern design stencils are available to create the look of wallpaper without the task of cutting and pasting. There is a new wallpaper product on the market that is easier to hang and can be changed out easily too. It is a peel & stick wallpaper and comes in individual roles, unlike traditional wallpaper that comes in multiple role lots. The options with either paint or wallpaper are many and only restricted by your imagination.
The kitchen is one of the most remodeled spaces. It generally involves ripping out cabinets, redoing layouts, and installing new flooring. The down side is a budget of ten to twenty thousand may be required to do it right. Budget of a couple of hundred dollars will still update the look of the kitchen with a little hard work and less of a construction zone. Simply, changing out the drawer pulls and knobs on the cabinetry or painting the existing ones has a big impact on the look of the kitchen. Wood cabinets are easily painted, or stripped and re-stained, creating a dramatic change to the kitchen. Changing the countertops can be as simple as laying tile, resurfacing the tops or repainting them. Any of these simple changes will create a completely new look in a drab kitchen. These same ideas work in the bathroom as well.
Slightly larger budgets will afford crown-molding, wainscoting or more elaborate trims. Adding these features to a room creates high impact visual appeal. There are several options for trim. For a bold look, install two types of molding of different widths. The trim will provide a punch of visual appeal, making the bare walls more interesting with a finished look.
A popular trend today is to recycle wood pallets, creating unique art the width of a wall. It is a more labor-intensive project, but is easy on the budget. Wood pallets are available from a variety of sources sometimes for very money and in some cases free. Before bringing, the wood into the home, pressure wash each piece to rid it of dirt, grime, peeling paint and any critters. Assemble each wood piece in a puzzle fashion, creating a favorable look. Finish the project by hanging the wood on the wall, or nailing it into the wall.
Other less expensive ideas include simply changing out accent pillows, window treatments or using slip covers to change the color of the sofa.
No matter the budget, any home deserves a refresh this time of year.
