BSIDE: the newest bro-band arrives to pop music

by byte clay

No one can deny the undeniable chemistry in an all-brothers band. From The Jonas Brothers to The Jackson 5, Hanson to Oasis, sibling groups have a strong history of ruling the airwaves. However, with Nick Jonas now turning out hits on his own, the world is in need of another brother band in pop music. The wait is finally over with BSIDE.

Comprised of two brothers originally from Barcelona, Spain, Ethan, 19, and Nico, 17, have many musical influences, including one former bro-band member specifically. “We love Diana Ross, Justin Bieber, The Jonas Brothers, Hanson and we’ve been listening a lot to Madonna, from the time we were young we were singing ‘Hung Up.’ We love all their styles,” Nico told byteclay.com. “But we grew up really loving Michael Jackson songs. Our idol is Michael Jackson, he’s our God.” In fact, Michael Jackson’s influence on the boys can be felt in every song they work on. “We always go back to Michael Jackson and ask ourselves if he would like the song,” Nico said. “When deciding on the tracks that make the album, [we think], what would Michael do?”

Nico explained how another boy band, One Direction, definitely influenced them, but they hope to take the 1D model even further. “I don’t want to criticize One Direction, I think their songs are amazing, but I don’t have any idea about who the songwriter or composer is,” Nico confessed. “I feel like they are a product of a team who made them big, whereas we write, compose, produce, record and master [everything ourselves].” Indeed, Nico and Ethan may not even be of legal drinking age in the U.S., but they have already learned how to make a pop song in its entirety from writing to recording–and everything they know was self-taught. “We spent hours and hours by ourselves [learning it all], no teacher,” Nico said.

One other skill the boys of BSIDE have mastered on their own is the art of dancing. “We love to dance. Dance is another manner to feel the music,” Nico said. “When Ethan told me he wants to dance, I told him [that’s good because] Michael Jackson was dancing all his career. We interviewed many choreographers and we found a great group of dancers [to dance with].” In fact, BSIDE had to fight to keep some of these dancers in the music video for their first single, “Tell Everybody.” “When picking our dancers, something happened that we stood up about. One of the best dancers was an overweight female,” Nico said. “Some people in the casting said ‘NO’ to her, but we demanded ‘YES’ and our manager backed us 100%. We do not tolerate discrimination against anyone!”

While fans have already given “Tell Everybody” thousands of view on YouTube, they’ll have to wait patiently until April 15th for the release of BSIDE’s 5-song EP. After that, BSIDE plans to record some short films for their next music videos and then visit the U.S. in the Spring or Summer. “We’ve been to New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco before,” Ethan told byteclay.com. “I like New York because it’s bigger and better than [anywhere].”

As for beyond that, the boys are hoping to have their full album finished within the year and make a name for themselves on both the charts and in the world of producing (Nico and Ethan have already produced songs for multiple artists, including the demo single for a Venezuelan band called Two Servings of Vanilla). “[In the next few years], we want to reach new places in the world where pop music right now doesn’t reach,” Ethan said. “We want to be producing for the biggest singers and our biggest goal is to arrive on the American charts.” Based on how much they’ve already accomplished, the boys of BSIDE clearly have the talent to achieve their goals, and at a time when America is yearning for a hot new bro-band to light up the pop charts, we may be hearing a lot more from Nico and Ethan in the very near future.
