Tuesday morning, the Belgium airport and parts of the subway system has been rocked by explosions during morning rush hour. According to the AP, the explosion that took place at the airport was a suicide bomber and that 3 other suicide vests were found. Multiple news sources are announcing that casualties number between 13 and 26. This story is continuing to develop.
According to Reuters, a witness to the bombing heard shouts in Arabic shortly before the two blasts hit the crowded airport. Pictures on social media of the airport, show extensive damage and that this was a massive bombing in the airport. All public transport in Brussels was shut down. An additional 225 soldiers were sent into the city and the Belgian Crisis Center who then appealed to the residents to “Stay where you are”. This act of terror comes days after the arrest of Paris terror attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam and others who have been identified as being involved in those acts of violence.
Authorities have said of the bombings that they were calculated and were well planned out. The Belgian Office of the King’s Prosecutor described the airport blast, at least, as a suicide attack. They announced that at least one explosion there happened outside the security checkpoints for ticketed passengers and near the airline check-in counters, an airline official briefed on the situation said. The Office of the King’s Prosecutor also announced that the subway station blast happened in the Brussels suburb of Maalbeek, near the European quarter, where much of the European Union is based.
Although this is an ongoing story, there have been calls to secure the borders of the nations in Europe. Those involved in this terrorist act have not been identified but the idea that some of those who planned out this attack may have come to Belgium through the refugee crisis and the acceptance of those refugees. The argument is that the refugees are not properly vetted and that terrorists can slip into European nations easily under the guise of being a refugee. Again, this act of terror has not been identified to any one particular group or has one taken responsibility for the attacks.
In response to the terrorist’s attack, Republican front runner Donald Trump tweeted, “Do you all remember how beautiful and safe a place Brussels was. Not anymore, it is from a different world! U.S. must be vigilant and smart!” President Obama, who is in Cuba on the first Presidential visit since President Calving Coolidge, has been advised of the attacks and a statement will be issued shortly. Democrats Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have not released a statement regarding the acts of terror in Brussels, yet.
