Tonight ASU Gammage announced their 2016-2017 Desert Schools Broadway Across America season, with several brand new direct from New York tours included in the 10 show series that begins this September. The announcement event included current Broadway star performers and awardees on this Monday evening, the traditional weekly ‘dark’ night when theatre folks have the evening off.
The newest Tony Award®-winning musicals include “Matilda,” “An American In Paris” and the drama “The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time.” Gammage says the season is headlined by “Beautiful – The Carole King Musical” that tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom. Backing up the claim was a guest appearance by Rebecca LaChance, the current national tour and past Broadway actress who plays Carole King. She sang two numbers from the show on the Gammage stage tonight.
In addition, the new Gammage season will mix in a couple traditional favorites, “The Sound of Music” and “Cabaret.” Special engagements beyond the regular season that ASU Gammage will present include the farewell tour of “Mamma Mia!,” Broadway’s magic hit “The Illusionists” and “The Book Of Mormon,” which broke ASU Gammage house records in 2015.
Michael Cerveris, two time Tony Award winner currently starring in “Fun Home” on Broadway, was also on hand at Gammage tonight, his star-studded family being presented the 2016 Gammy Award. Cerveris announced to cheers that “Fun Home” would be included in the 2017-18 Gammage season. The biggest tease prior to Cerveris’ announcement for the 2017-18 was that the smash hit rap musical currently on Broadway, “Hamilton,” will also be a premiere Tempe engagement.
