Motorist Struck and Killed After Exiting Vehicle on I-85 in Atlanta
A motorist was struck and killed after he exited his vehicle on I-85 Sunday morning in northeast Atlanta.
The wreck happened after a black Camaro stopped in the center lane of I-85 southbound at Georgia 400 shortly before 4 a.m., according to Atlanta police and Georgia State Patrol. A witness said he did not see the impact, but believes the driver exited the vehicle and was in the road when he was struck by another car, according to Channel 2 Action News.
The entire windshield was shattered and part of the roof caved in from the crash, the news station reported. Three people were in the car that struck the driver, but all of them appeared to be fine as they spoke to the police, Channel 2 reported.
One driver told the news station he saw the Camaro stopped with emergency flashers activated, and the body of the victim nearby on the ground.
“Look like he’d been run over a couple times,” driver Torry Sumlin told Channel 2. “I swerved around him to the left and came back to the right and side of the road and dialed 911. There was nothing I could do. I couldn’t get back out there in traffic.”
So far, police have not released the man’s name and investigators are trying to determine why he may have been in traffic. All lanes of I-85 were shut down until shortly before 6:45 a.m.
