Driver Struck Man While Passing Apartment Complex
A man was driving by an apartment complex when he realized he struck something Thursday night in Athens. He turned around and discovered a man lying on the side of the road.
The incident happened around 8:05 p.m. on Kathwood Drive, according to Athens-Clarke County police. Investigators said Kevin Michael Kloepfer, of Sedgefield Place, was driving a 2010 Scion eastbound on Kathwood Drive when the incident happened. Kloepfer was passing Rolling Ridge Apartments when he struck something with the front passenger side of his vehicle, police spokeswoman Hilda Sorrow said. “He turned around to locate what he had hit and he found a male lying in a ditch on the south side of the road,” Sorrow said.
Kloepfer immediately called 911 and officers as well as Fire Rescue and EMS responded to the scene, Sorrow said. The male, who was later identified as Marcus Teron, of Spring Valley Road, was transported to Athens Regional Medical Center where he was i critical condition Friday, officials said.
Though he was conscious when he was found in a ditch on the side of the road, the 47-year-old Teron was unable to tell police what happened, according to the Athens Banner-Herald.
The first officer to arrive on the scene said the victim’s eyes were open and he was breathing, but when attempting to speak with him, Teron “moved his lips but no words came out,” according to police.
The driver told police he was not on the phone or texting at the time of the wreck, which happened on a dark street with no street lights. An officer mentioned in a police report that Teron had a faint odor of alcoholic on his breath, but police did not know if that was a factor in the crash, the Banner-Herald reported.
Police said they found no evidence the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and he agreed to have his blood drawn at the Athens Regional Medical Center, police said. It was unclear what Teron was doing when he was struck by the vehicle. So far, no charges have been filed in the incident, which remains under investigation.
