Old Forester 1870 Original Batch
Old Forester 1870 Original Batch is a toast to George Garvin Brown’s original 1870 batching process.
In those years, Brown batched barrels from three distilleries to make one barrel of Bourbon. Today Old Forester selects barrels from three warehouses, each barrel originating from a different day of production, with a different entry proof and a different age profile.
The three expressions of Old Forester are then batched together to craft Old Forester 1870 Original Batch. The 90-proof bourbon is then minimally filtered, to honor the processes available to George Garvin Brown in 1870.
Old Forester 1870 gives you a taste of what your Great Grandfather may have drank. It has a rich flavor of cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg, sort of like Great Grandmothers kitchen. So sit down and have a drink with the old folks.
Four Roses Bourbon had been made and sold in the USA since the 1860’s but in the 1940’s Seagram purchased the company and decided not to sell Four Roses in the USA anymore. All that good Bourbon was shipped to Europe and Asia. Then in 2002, under new ownership and vision the Four Roses brand was once again available in it’s homeland. If that by itself isn’t a great story to have a drink over, here’s another.
“It began when Paul Jones, Jr., the founder of Four Roses Bourbon, became smitten by the beauty of a Southern belle. It is Isaid that he sent a proposal to her, and she replied that if her answer were “Yes,” she would wear a corsage of roses on her gown to the upcoming grand ball. Paul Jones waited for her answer excitedly on that night of the grand ball…when she arrived in her beautiful gown, she wore a corsage of four red roses. He later named his Bourbon “Four Roses” as a symbol of his devout passion for the lovely belle, a passion he thereafter transferred to making his beloved Four Roses Bourbon.”
Four Roses has been named American Whisky Distiller of the Year for 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2015 by Whisky Magazine. Four Roses handcrafts 10 different Bourbon recipes, then mingles them by hand to create their family of award-winning Bourbans.
Their Small Batch is a great place to begin a walk through the Four Roses garden of Bourbons.
