Boonton High School defeated Hasbrouck Heights High School, in overtime, 65-64, in the first round of the NJ State Tournament.
Boonton came with an effective game strategy. They played a box and one the entire game on Hasbrouck Heights’ point guard Stacey Porzl, which caused Porzl to work harder to get open. It also pulled Heights out of their regular game. Regardless, Porzl knew how to handle the pressure and used teammates as screens and then attacked the basket. She was great at drawing fouls. She had 4 rebounds, 7 steals, 1 assist, and 22 points. The game was tied at the end of the first quarter 12-12.
Boonton’s Rhiannon Groll is one of the fastest players in the state. She is not only fast at going the length of the court, but her cross-overs are also lightning quick. She knows how to use her speed to her advantage and can get her shot off with a variety of ways. She had 7 rebounds, 3 steals, 7 assists, and 26 points. Boonton led at the half-time 31-25.
Hasbrouck Heights’ Sami Partyka is a hard-working defender. She anticipates well and is tenacious at getting the ball. She made several critical stops to keep Heights in the game. She had 12 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists, 4 blocked shots, and 15 points. Boonton’s Adriana Dika is a strong outside shooter. She had 12 points along with 1 assist and 1 steal. Boonton led at the end of the third quarter 44-37.
Heights made a big comeback in the fourth quarter. Gina Pianese scored a bucket to tie the game for Heights with 3:53 remaining. Pianese ended with 10 points, 6 rebounds, 1 steal, and 3 blocks. Both teams matched each other point for point until Boonton had the lead with :11.3 left in the fourth, 56-54. Following a time out Porzl drove to the basket and scored a lay-up to send the game into overtime, 56-56.
Boonton’s Karina Meyer and Chelsea Davis both worked to box out. Davis had 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 blocked shot, and 6 points. Meyer had 4 rebounds, 1 steal, and 9 points. Heights’ Jillian Sears had several nice outside shots. She finished with 3 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist, and 15 points.
Heights was up 64-63 with a few seconds left in the over-time when Boonton’s Groll was fouled while dribbling. Heights was over the limit and sent Groll to the line for the one and one. Groll made both foul shots earning Boonton the win, 65-64.
