BOOM! Studios is no stranger to making great comics based on licensed material like “Adventure Time,” “Regular Show,” and “Peanuts.” But it is their newest comic that has broken all the sales records in the company’s ten-year history. Saban’s “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” Zero issue published in January has sold more than any other book BOOM! has ever published and is set to go to a third printing and that is just the warm up for the launch of the series.
“Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” #1 is set to shatter the record sales of the “Zero” issue by surpassing the 47,000 of the initial print run’s sales with the first issue preorders reportedly in excess of 75,000 copies. The new series is written by Kyle Higgins (“Nightwing”) with art by Hendry Prasetyo (“Green Lantern: New Guardians”) the series is focusing on the first year of Tommy aka the Green Ranger after turning good.
As part of the launch of the new series Higgins will be meeting fans and signing books at Collector’s Paradise in Winnetka on the day of the “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” #1’s release, March 2, 2016 from 6 pm to 8 pm. To commemorate the event Collector’s Paradise will have an exclusive variant cover featuring the Green Ranger by artist Philip Tan and colored by Elmer Santos. This cover will be available in store but also through the Collector’s Paradise online store.
The series starts with the Green Ranger joining the team following his rejection of Rita Repulsa and it promises to feature the Red, Black, Yellow, Pink, and Blue Rangers getting to know their new friend. Higgins a fan of the show during its initial television debut 20 years ago wants to focus on what makes these characters so exciting and enduring. As Higgins told Newsarama during the initial announcement of the new series, “What resonated so much . . . is the idea of these teens of different walks of life that come together in order to save the world. So even down to their Zords working solo, but coming together to make the Megazord becoming stronger that way, it’s a testament to the powers of teamwork and friendship.”
The third printing of “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” Zero will be available alongside the debut issue on March 2. The issue gives the first glimpse of Higgins and Prasetyo’s story with Tommy feeling like he is torn in two directions – his past and his future.
What really jumps out in “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” Zero is the artwork for the series which puts the original cast in a new and modern light. Praseyto is giving an updated look to the heroes who reaked of strange 1990s fashion on the television show, now they look like true high school teens. The art has a good pace to it with each panel on the page working to move the narrative forward. As the story progresses Praseyto gets to cut his teeth on the first Zord action. The Power Rangers are united and they take on the first monster of the series.
For a short intro to the characters Higgins is able to nicely boil down who they are at this time through upbeat dialogue that quickly identifies each Ranger and their personality. The dissension among the team is palpable but it also serves as a nice conflict for their personal stories.
The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers revival is completed in the Zero issue by a short Bulk and Skull back up story by Steve Orlando and Corin Howell. The preview story of this regularly occurring back up feature shows the two trouble makers much like they appeared in the television series with their own juvenile pranks running concurrently with the Rangers’ more disconcerting issues.
The zero issue is and will be highly sought after as the short story is an excellent lead in for the new series shipping monthly from BOOM! Studios.
