Note: Since this article’s publication, the video and post have since been removed from Bonnaroo’s Facebook page. We will update this story as more news comes available.
It’s been less than two weeks since the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival announced their initial 2016 lineup on Jan. 19th via the Conan O’Brien Show on TBS. While bands like Pearl Jam, LCD Soundsystem and Ellie Goulding got plenty of fans excited, others began the wait for the first round of artist additions. On Jan. 31st, they got one, although it’s unclear if the announcement was an intentional one, as a video posted on the official Bonnaroo Facebook page showed Canadian artist Grimes among the listed artists.
The video, which was billed as the Bonnaroo 2016 Lineup Announcement, was posted in the late afternoon of Jan. 31st and featured a graphical listing of the announced artists set to the song “Growls” by Bonnaroo 2016 artist Givers. There was nothing in the post to mark it as unusual until some eagle-eyed video watchers noticed that, nestled between confirmed artists Two Door Cinema Club and Lennon Claypool Delirium was Grimes. As the video went on, it was clear that this wasn’t an accidental misspelling of already confirmed artist RL Grime, as that name also appeared in the video.
Bonnaroo has not said if this was an intentional Easter egg left for fans who watched the video or not. The festival already had one accident a week before the lineup release as nearly 100 bands were accidentally put up on the Bonnaroo Mobile App, something Conan O’Brien worked into his official announcement the next week.
Whether this was an accident or a reward for Facebook followers, it’s news that is sure to excite many Bonnaroo fans. Long anticipated to be on the lineup due to a gap in tour dates, many fans were disappointed when Grimes wasn’t included in the initial drop. Grimes released one of the best reviewed albums of 2015 in “Art Angels” and she is a highly sought out festival get.
Bonnaroo 2016 will be held June 9-12 at Great Stage Park in Manchester, Tn. Other announced acts include J. Cole, Jason Isbell, and Mavis Staples. You can see the initial Bonnaroo 2016 lineup, minus Grimes, here.
